Those complicated moments in mentoring.....

Have you experienced one yet?  If not, get ready.... at some point your mentee may just say something that causes you to wait, worry and wonder......"What should I do?"  Read More...

         QUESTION OF THE MONTH

My mentee told me he is moving?

"My mentee told me he is moving, but he is still at school weeks later.  I don't know what to think."  Kids overhear their parent's conversations and sometimes assume what is being said is going to happen, and sometimes it doesn't.  As a mentor, you are left wondering what, when, and why?  Are you are tempted to dig a little deeper about the circumstances and ask for details?   While it is natural to be curious, good intentions and understandable motivations can sometimes cause us to slip and ask too much, not realizing that we are pushing the boundaries of our mentor/mentee relationship.

Is it okay to inquire? Of course, but instead of asking why he said he is moving but didn't, let him know how happy you are he is here today.  Continue to listen and be in the moment.  Regardless of what may happen, or better yet, because we don't know what the future may hold, celebrating and honoring the relationship in the present, strengthens his confidence and lets him know he is a gift.

As you become more comfortable with your mentee, it is normal to want to know more about him/her.  Watch your email this month for a message from your Mentor Director, sharing additional boundaries to be mindful of as you build your relationship.

          For 5th Grade Mentors:
        Let's Get Organized

It's March, and gardeners among us are organizing tools and preparing to plant seeds, in hopes of full blooms this summer.  In a few months, our 5th graders will be starting new in Middle School. As their mentors, it is our hope they will bloom where they are planted!

This month, share with your mentee helpful tips in preparing for and cultivating success at school.  With the right tools our mentees can learn how to stay organized, set goals and reap the rewards!  Read More...

    STAAR TESTING:

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER

This year, March 30 - APRIL 3 is STAAR testing in all elementary and middle schools.  Seedling makes every effort to respect our campus partners by asking that mentors do not visit during STAAR TESTING WEEK, so that the school staff can focus uninterrupted on the important business at hand.  This request is for ALL MENTORS, regardless if your mentee is in a testing grade. (During these weeks, lunch schedules sometimes change, and spaces normally available for mentoring are likely to be occupied by small testing groups.)

After the first STAAR testing week, there will be two weeks to visit before the next round of testing:  APRIL 20 - 24.

Try to remind your mentee that you will not be visiting the week of STAAR and will return the week after.  Thank you so much for your support, and being a STAR in your mentee's life!

                  Seedling Mentor Training in March

Connecting with your mentee requires not only your dedication to the relationship, but also an understanding of your mentee's unique circumstances. Join us for the March Mentor Training, where we will tackle the topic of  understanding the differences among ADHD, ADD and just a really energetic kid.

Watch your email for the March Mentor Training invitation, coming soon.

Any mentee 12 years old or younger is eligible to submit any number of entries for the Office of the Attorney General's annual  My Sticker Calendar!

The award-winning bilingual calendar helps parents and children track and plan time spent in each parent's home.  Have your mentee draw a favorite activity that a child and parent do together or something that represents the holidays for the month or change of seasons.  The deadline is Wednesday, April 1, but recall that you will not see your mentee that week due to STAAR testing.

Entries should be mailed to:
