Seguin Fire News
This winter has got off to a slow start. Now that the cold temperatures are setting in many residents will want to get out and enjoy the lakes in a different way. Whether you are snowmobiling, snowshoeing or ice skating we all need to be extremely careful to not go where the ice is unsafe. Many conditions can lead to unsafe ice conditions. These include water currents, recent rains and mild spring weather.

Every year, Seguin Fire Services responds to emergencies that deal with residents going through the ice. The best way be sure that the ice is safe is to consult local marinas, outfitters or snowmobile clubs. Just because you see a recent snowmobile track across the ice does not mean that it is safe. Please ensure that conditions are appropriate prior for venturing out.

Seguin Fire Services is equipped with all the appropriate gear and have a group of specially trained firefighters to enter into the cold water to conduct rescues. However, if you do go through the ice you have very limited time to self-rescue prior to the cold water incapacitating your ability to function. If you are with a group of people and someone goes through immediately call 911. Even if you are able to get out yourself we are at least on our way and will assist with the treatment for hypothermia.

The Fire Department is continually looking for new members to participate in serving your community. If you are interested in this challenging activity please contact us at the municipal office. Fire services logo

Rosseau Memorial Hall will soon be fully accessible!

The Township of Seguin recognizes the Government of Canada for the upcoming renovations to the Rosseau Memorial Hall.

As the only non-accessible community centre in Seguin Township, this hall was scheduled for renovations in 2017 to meet the upcoming accessibility legislation deadlines set by the AODA. The Township of Seguin recently received $100,000, the maximum allowable grant, through the Government of Canada's Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150). This program is delivered through FedNor in Northern Ontario, and is part of the Government of Canada's coordinated approach to mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation by investing in the rehabilitation, and improvement or expansion of existing community infrastructure assets and facilities.

Seguin Township gratefully acknowledges the Government of Canada for this support. Renovations are scheduled to take place throughout the 2017 calendar year. We apologize for any inconvenience to users during the construction phase but look forward to serving all users in a fully accessible building soon!

A message from Mayor Bruce Gibbon
Well 2016 is now in the history books and 2017 is here! Last year was a productive year for Staff and Council and many of those accomplishments have been outlined in our 2016 Successes document. There is good reason to believe 2017 will be equally as good a year for the Township of Seguin! I encourage you to view the 2017 Strategic Objectives document, which outlines the goals we've set for ourselves for the upcoming year based on the 3 Strategic Directions laid out in the Township of Seguin Strategic Plan; Environment, Economic Vitality & Efficient and Effective Service Delivery.
Earlier this year, Council approved the 2017 Budget in principle. Some highlights include:
  • 1% tax rate increase for 2017, lower than most neighboring municipalities.
  • Major 2017 capital projects include Clear Lake Road Phase 1, Rosseau Memorial Hall accessibility upgrades, Overlay (Otter Lake Road, Black Road, Islandview), Christie Sand Shed and the continuation of our Waste Strategy in Humphrey)
  • Monies have also been allocated for some major capital purchases in 2017 including a new Public Works Tandem Dump and Facilities plow truck.
There will undoubtedly be a lot of activities ongoing this winter season in Seguin Township. A full list of community events can be found in this newsletter and as always, please continue to check our website calendar of events for dates, times and locations. I encourage everyone to get out and about and enjoy what the season has to offer. Also, thank you to all of our volunteers who generously donate their time and efforts to ensure the success of these community events.

Lastly, to say the least, the winter weather in Seguin is unpredictable. As a result, I ask everyone to stay prepared for the snow, ice and colder temperatures that will surely come this season. Most importantly, drive safely! Our Public Works department is out there day and night during this time of year doing their very best to maintain safe driving conditions for all. Thank you everyone in advance for your support and cooperation. All the best, and I hope it is an enjoyable season for all!

Sincerely,
Mayor Bruce Gibbon

Humphrey Arena nominated for Kraft Hockeyville 2017!

The Humphrey Arena in Seguin Township has been nominated among thousands of other communities across Canada in the hopes of becoming the next Kraft Hockeyville! The top prize is $100,000 in arena upgrades and the opportunity to host a pre-season NHL game!

The top 10 entries will be decided by a panel of judges between now and March 3rd and announced publicly on March 4th. If we are lucky enough to be one of the top 10 then it will go to a public vote, at which time we would need EVERYONE to vote! But for now, we just need you to get active and join the conversation online to make them notice us!! Get social and use the hastag
#KRAFTHOCKEYVILLE in your posts!

Got a picture of you or your kids enjoying the game of hockey in Seguin? Even better, videos speak volumes! Even just team photos or comments about how much you LOVE the Humphrey Arena! We need to let them know that this community lives and breathes hockey!

Seguin Develops Parks & Trails
Master Plan

Attractive, safe and well maintained public parks, open spaces, recreation facilities and trails are essential elements of Seguin's image and quality of life. The Parks and Trails Master Plan serves as a guide for Township staff and Council when making decisions about investment, management, and promotion of local parks and trails. The plan is an inventory and analysis of existing facilities and identifies the issues, needs and opportunities in order to connect people, provide social and recreation opportunities, protect the environment and support community partnerships.

News from the Building Department
After a busy and successful 2016, we have been working diligently on making 2017 another great year. There are a couple of new projects that the Building Department has been working on over the winter in preparation for the new year.

The Building Department has been updating Seguin's Building By-law, which includes clarification to Building Department procedures, changes to some existing permit fees and additions of new permit & administrative fees. There will be a public meeting held at the Seguin municipal office in March or April to allow any resident of Seguin to provide feedback on the proposed changes. The date of the meeting will be advertised at least 3 weeks prior so that residents may plan for their attendance. Information about the changes will be available through the seguin.ca website and at the municipal office front desk.

For the first time since 2012, the 'Building in Seguin Workshop' is coming back! This workshop will be a 3-hour presentation that provides an overview of the Building Code, the building application process, planning considerations and new developments. It is mainly geared towards contractors/builders, designers and property owners that have ongoing projects, future plans for development or are just interested in the building process in Seguin. The workshop will be presented by both the Seguin Building and Planning Department staff and have guest speakers from the local North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority office in regards to septic system requirements.

The workshop will be held upstairs at the Humphrey Community Center on Saturday, April 22, 2017. Coffee and snacks will be provided. Watch for the advertisement through the seguin.ca website or your local newspaper and send your RSVP asap!

News from Public Works
Roads
We are well into winter and this is just a reminder not to tailgate plow trucks for any reason, especially going up hills. If you can't see the drivers mirrors, he can't see you. Plow trucks have some traction issues on slippery days as well. Be mindful of the more frequent freeze / thaw cycles. Be careful driving and getting in and out of your car at transfer sites. Report any slippery conditions to the town office 705-732-4300 or after hours at 705-751-0050. If you are walking along the road, and a plow truck is coming, please move off to the side of the road to let the plow to complete its plow pass and make eye contact with the driver. Our drivers are trained to stop for pedestrians until they are clear to proceed.

Please be reminded that there is NO parking on municipal roads from November 1-April 15 (Seguin Bylaw 2005-164). This bylaw was created to ensure that township plow operators can safely do their job without risk of injury or property damage. If it is snowing, and you are parked on a road that is being plowed, you will receive a ticket. If it is not snowing, and you do park for a short term on a municipal road, make sure  your vehicle is as far off the road as possible and in clear line of site to on-coming traffic.

Half loads season begins on March 1 - May 31, subject to mother nature. If you need to haul heavy, do it before the ground begins to thaw. Seguin enforces our Half Load restrictions to protect tax payers roads investments, so when in doubt, call the office.

Waste
Waste Management is for Seguin residents and property owners ONLY! Please do not dump illegal materials at our transfer sites. This costs the taxpayer's money and additional labour to clean up the mess. If you observe someone dumping illegally, or want to report the condition of a waste transfer site please call our Bylaw Enforcement department during regular business hours at 705-732-4300, or after hours at 705-751-0050. The Township of Seguin's new landfill hours will include Fridays all year long. This is in part to provide more service hours for residents and seasonal land owners, but also to discourage illegal dumping by providing more opportunities to unload at the landfill site.

If you want to donate aluminum cans for Belvedere Heights, receptacles are located at Brooks and Christie transfer sites

New this year starting this spring, Red bins will be located at all Transfer sites. These are to collect  textiles for the Canadian Diabetes Association's Clothesline program. This includes clothing, shoes, accessories, bed and bath sheets towels, pillows, draperies, linens, plush toys and any other textiles. The township benefits by diverting 800kg per year from the landfill, and the charity collects materials for fundraising. Win-Win!
