Movies 2015

What to expect in our selection this year?

You might be wondering what we have in store for this year's festival. Well, we cannot completely give away the secret - yet - but here is a sneak peek, with some subjects and themes literally torn from the headlines!

One thing is for sure, you will still be able to experience the France of today through a wide lens. For example, we have confirmed at least one film that talks about immigration. Another film features important questions about the French social model. Inter-generational plots are also the fabric of several films, whether within the family, at work, with friends or in the educational system.

Important topics from around the world, notably French-speaking countries, will be brought to the screen: Islam, cheating to get to the top, globalization, the environment, and even the call of adventure... We have selected films from great masters as well as fresh, young voices- we are curating from among the very best filmmakers, male and female, from throughout the French-speaking world.

A number of movies are infused with other art forms, such as music and theatre.

Comedy, drama, thriller, family, documentary... all genres will be once again showcased in our 2015 edition. Several featured guests will attend the festival this year to present their films -- some of which will be premieres -- to share their vision with you. Focus on French Cinema brings you up close and personal with the artists who make and star in the films you will see... and we can't wait to tell you who is coming. Stay tuned!

All this, and we are only a little over halfway through our selection process for your 11th edition-- there will be more to come!

To be the first to learn about our full slate of films, events and guests for 2015, keep in touch and please help us spread the word by forwarding, "liking" and tweeting us to all your friends!

A glimpse at French releases

Looking at the Box Office in France (which counts spectators, not sales), we were very pleased to see several critically acclaimed movies in the top 10!

Timbuktu, 6th in this week's box office, is an arresting, beautiful drama about the influx of fundamentalist Islam in Mali.

Les Hritiers, at number 8, is a great story about inner-city students who are guided by their charismatic teacher to enter a student contest and learn as much about the history of the Holocaust as they do about themselves (based on a true story).

Qu'Allah bnisse la France rounds up the top 10. Abd Al Malik's adaptation of his own autobiography is getting a lot of press and the musician-writer-director was the guest on the program Journal de 20h (the ber-important 8pm news). You can see this interview (in French) here and the international trailer (with English subtitles) by clicking the image to the right. Recognizing that cinema is "the cultural tool of the 21st Century", Malik wants to share his story: inner city kid turned honor student, artist and believer; to fight the clichs that divide France.

Do you know?

French cinema at home is easy...

French movies don't always last long on U.S. screens. Well, you can now bring home the best of French cinema, either on demand or by visiting libraries near you. If you become a member of the Alliance Franaise of Greenwich, you will also have access to over 500 titles in our collection and will automatically become a co-member of the French Institute - Alliance Franaise in Manhattan as well, which gives you access to their extensive collection and the digital library Culturethque. Both organizations also feature several cinematic events in their cultural programs!
