Senate to Consider TIADA Supported Legislation to Reduce Regulator Burden

With just two week left in the session, the Texas Senate will soon vote on two TIADA-supported bills designed to eliminate unnecessary government regulation that burdens dealers and will make operation of their businesses more efficient. House Bill 2067 filed by Rene Oliveira (D - Brownsville) would align the tax code with the recent Comptroller's ruling eliminating the requirement that dealers with a Related Finance Company (RFC) register it with the state annually. House Bill 2949 (R - Rockwall) would eliminate the need for dealers to notify the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner (OCCC) when they increase their doc fee above $50 but below the safe harbor amount set by the Finance Committee.

TIADA has worked tirelessly during the legislative session to support these bills and shepherd them through the legislative process. On Monday, TIADA Executive Director Jeff Martin and TIADA member Erika Blakenship of Texas Auto Center were on hand to support HB 2067 at a Senate Finance Committee hearing. It was voted out of committee and will be considered by the full Senate by the end of the week. Today, Martin was again on hand to support HB 2949 at a public hearing as it too was voted out of committee. The Senate is expected to take up this bill sometime early next week

TIADA will continue to support both of these bills as senators debate and vote on them and afterwards when they are sent to Governor Abbott for his signature. Y our best source for up-to-the-minute information on these bills and other legislation is the TIADA Legislation Action Center.

Even in Texas, Sometimes the Billionaires Lose

Sometimes even billionaires don't get what they want. That's the lesson emerging from an apparently failed attempt to craft a "carve-out" from protectionist Texas auto laws for famed investor Warren Buffett, one of the wealthiest men on the planet. Buffett is in a regulatory pickle because Texas is poised to bar him from owning both a vehicle manufacturing company and auto dealerships under byzantine state rules crafted with influence from powerful auto interests.
