| Tour the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument this Saturday
If you haven't been to the top of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument at the top of East Rock, mark your calendars for this Saturday, October 13. The monument will be open for tours between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. for a suggested donation of $5. Tours are open to children ages 10 and above, but those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The Kindergarten Canvass and Promise/Parent University Canvass were huge successes in August and September. The New Haven Public Schools, the City, the United Way of Greater New Haven and New Haven Promise are partnering for a final canvass this year to speak to families enrolled in Boost! schools. The canvass will take place Saturday, October 13th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Fair Haven and Hill neighborhoods. Click here to sign up. For our Kindergarten Canvass in August, 219 volunteers knocked on nearly 1,500 doors and made direct contact with about half of the families. Last month, nearly 80 canvassers knocked on 783 doors to talk to parents about New Haven Promise and Parent University. We're fortunate for this third and final canvass to have the support of several local non-profits, who will be sending volunteers to knock on doors this Saturday. City Seeks Federal Funds for Indoor Firing Range
Senator Richard Blumenthal toured the New Haven Police Department firing range today as local, state and federal agencies pressed the case for federal funding for a new indoor firing range. The existing range at 710 Sherman Parkway is in a residential neighborhood within earshot of four local schools, exposing young children to the sounds of gunfire at all times of the day and night. The City is in the process of acquiring an alternative site to use as a new indoor regional firing range. Construction of the new range is expected to cost approximately $6.5 million. The City is seeking federal funds for the effort. Because firing ranges are sparse in the Northeast, the facility is used by numerous partner agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Secret Service, Drug Enforcement Agency, U.S. Marshals Service, IRS and Coast Guard, in addition to numerous local and state law enforcement agencies. This is a regional facility used by numerous local, state and federal agencies. As we look to construct a more appropriate indoor facility, it makes sense that this regional effort receives federal support. I appreciate Senator Blumenthal's interest today and look forward to working with him in the future on this effort. Senator Blumenthal had this to say: "The City of New Haven needs a new firing range to eliminate serious quality of life concerns for area residents and students at four local schools. I will support New Haven in seeking federal funding for the construction of a new indoor facility. Since federal agencies regularly use this facility for training and practice, federal funds should help cover the cost of constructing a new one that is less intrusive." Alderwoman Brenda Foskey-Cyrus, whose ward the existing range is located in, had this to say: "This has been an ongoing issue for many years with my neighbors. Children should not have to hear gunshots while in school. I look forward to seeing the firing range moved to a more appropriate location." Beaver Hill Alderwoman Claudette Robinson-Thorpe said: "Beaver Hill residents are looking forward to a new location for the firing range. This is a good residential neighborhood and gunshots from the firing range are a serious quality of life issue."  |
Bregamos Community Theater to Host Open House
Bregamos Community Theater will host an open house 6 p.m. Thursday, October 25 for teens and adults interested in joining The Warehouse Ensemble and the cast of the new production Hope High, Class of 84. The Warehouse Ensemble is a new intensive theater program that includes training, workshops and fieldtrips. The program begins in November and runs through June.
The Warehouse Ensemble will join adult community members in the new music and dance infused production called Hope High, Class of 84, scheduled for May 2013. Hope High takes place in a rundown high school in the 1980s. As the building falls to pieces, students work to sort out their own lives. Interested open house visitors may sign up for audition dates and times. The open house will also feature an open mic jam and free refreshments. This event is free and open to the public. Poets, singers, dancers, actors and musicians of all ages are encouraged to attend. School District Releases Results of Second Year of Teacher Evaluation System
The Board of Education Tuesday released the results of the second year of the district's new teacher evaluation system, heralded as a model nationwide by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, the American Federation of Teachers and the New York Times. The success of the district's evaluation system played a large role in New Haven's receipt of $53.8 million in federal Teacher Incentive Fund dollars from the U.S. Department of Education last month. The grant will help support, develop and retain top teaching talent.
In year two of implementation, TEVAL continues to be a recognition that identifying, developing and retaining talented educators is vital to the success of New Haven School Change. The $53.8 million federal Teacher Incentive Fund grant is the greatest federal recognition of New Haven School Change to date and will be a game changer for the district's ability to further support top teaching talent.
