The Cinema Arts Centre Pilots Sensory Friendly Screening Program!
The Cinema Arts Centre is proud to offer a special opportunity for those with autism and special needs to enjoy a movie in a safe and accepting environment. We will turn the lights up, and turn the sound down, so all can relax and enjoy quality time without worry. This is also a great opportunity for families to meet, siblings of those with autism to find peers, and for anyone to enjoy a fun film in a welcoming environment.

Saturday, May 12 at 11 am we will present a sensory friendly screening of THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER - a film that can be enjoyed at any age! The screening will be followed by a reception in our Sky Room with healthy foods from bee-ORGANIC , a long-time supporter of the Cinema Arts Centre, with locations in Huntington and Great Neck, offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in between, with lots of vegan and gluten free options.
A few months ago, the Cinema Arts Centre conducted a series of focus groups. More than one participant spoke about the need for more sensory friendly screenings in our community.

"As a parent of an autistic adult, even going to the movies can be very challenging and stressful. I am so pleased that The Cinema Arts Centre is reaching out to the special needs community and providing a comfortable environment. My family is looking forward to attend the first autism friendly screening, and many more," shared Michele W. who had provided vital feedback to us during our focus group and in subsequent follow-up conversations.

Jacqueline Strayer, a member of our Board of Directors who conducted the focus groups pro-bono, remarked, "Our focus group participants generously shared their thoughts and ideas about how we at the CAC could be more responsive to the needs of our community. The idea for this program is a direct outgrowth of their ideas. We are delighted, as a result of their involvement, the CAC is becoming more inclusive through this new programming."

Rene Bouchard, CAC's Director of Development who helped to facilitate the focus groups and had a very personal reaction to the idea of Sensory Friendly Screenings, shared, "My son has Tourette Syndrome and had sensory integration issues when he was younger. When I heard the moms in the focus groups speak so movingly about feeling home-bound and unable to take their children to public screenings, I thought about how challenging it was with my own son at the height of his Tourette's symptoms. It would have been a relief to have had a judgement-free environment where my son could enjoy a film with us and not have to worry about tics, or being agitated by the loud volume.”

This May 12th sensory friendly screening of THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER will be our first in what we plan to include among our regular offerings. We will be asking attendees to share feedback with us so that we can make this series the best it can be.

SEAT REPLACEMENT UPDATE:

During last year's annual campaign we reserved a portion of funds raised for seat replacement. Funds raised through sales of seat plaques have also been reserved for seat replacement. However, the timeline of this project has changed. Originally scheduled for fall, and then winter, we are now waiting for a third party issue to be resolved before we can set a new date for replacing our seats in cinemas one and two. All funds contributed specifically for seat replacement are being held aside for this project, which we are committed to seeing through. We will continue to provide updates as the timeline becomes more clear.

THANK YOU.
