Tip Results in Shut Down of Large Scale Marijuana Grows
A tip received from a citizen about an illegal marijuana grow in the City of Newcastle led to a five-month investigation resulting in the seizure of more than 6,000 marijuana plants, 180 pounds of processed marijuana and $3 million in cash.

This Newcastle Police Beat covers the Sept. 1-14 timeframe. 


The Newcastle Police Department served a search warrant on a vehicle earlier this week. Inside we found property from multiple theft and burglary victims in the southeast King County area. While we have returned some property, we are looking for the other owners. 

We believe most items were stolen in burglaries and vehicle prowls between Sept. 8 and 9. The crimes are suspected to have occurred from Federal Way up to Newcastle.

City Hosts Fall Recycling Event Saturday

Newcastle residents will have the opportunity to dispose of recyclable materials at a city-sponsored collection event Sept. 16, 2017.

Bring unwanted batteries, styrofoam, cardboard, motor oil and more to  Hazelwood Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Certain types of household and hazardous wastes, such as house paint, pesticides, herbicides, cleaning products and fluorescent lights, will not be accepted.

Bellevue PD Detains Suspect in Newcastle Attic

At about 2:50 p.m. Sept. 11, the Bellevue Police Department responded to a report of a purse theft at Bellevue Square. The four suspects fled in a car that was eventually located in Newport Hills. Three of the suspects were detained, while the fourth ran into a Newcastle residence in the 7100 block of 121st Avenue Southeast and hid in the attic. 

The police response included the Bellevue SWAT Team, a K9 unit, the King County Sheriff's Office Guardian One helicopter and more. The man in the Newcastle attic was eventually taken into police custody at about 6 p.m.

Update: Golf Club Road Lane Closures Start Sept. 21

Drivers should prepare for lane closures on Newcastle Golf Club Road just east of the Coal Creek Family YMCA starting on Sept. 21 and continuing through Nov. 14.

For approximately one-quarter mile, the eastbound lane will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. When conditions permit, lanes in both directions may be open, however, most of the time, only one lane will be open. Traffic control flaggers will be on site to direct traffic.

Drivers: School is Back in Session

School is officially back in session across the city. Drivers, please be mindful of school zones when children are present and adhere to any posted speed limit and stop signs.  With the new  Risdon Middle School  in place at the corner of 116th and Newcastle Way, we're reminding motorists to watch their speeds along those corridors before and after school.

"Motorists aren't used to Risdon Middle School and the crosswalk along Newcastle Way. They are speeding and not seeing the students," said Newcastle Police Chief Melinda Irvine.

Sept. 26 is National Voter Registration Day

Have you moved recently? Did you just turn 18? Has your named changed? Now is the perfect time to update your voter registration before the November election. 

Sept. 26 is  National Voter Registration Day , an event designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right - the right to vote. 

Risdon MS Grand Opening Celebration is Oct. 12

Mark your calendar for the grand opening celebration of Risdon Middle School, Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017, 6-8 p.m., 6928 116th Ave. SE, Newcastle, WA 98056. Come celebrate the district's newest school with music, food and tours of the new facility.

The new middle school  opened this August  right next to Hazelwood Elementary School.
Newcastle Library Hosts City Council Candidate Forum

The Newcastle Library and the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce have partnered to host a City Council candidate forum on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. The forum offers voters a chance to meet and hear from the Newcastle City Council candidates.

The event will be moderated and the discussion will feature topics and questions from the community. The library is currently collecting public feedback in an effort to build an event that reflects citizen concerns and priorities. Please submit candidate questions at  kcls.org/newcastlecandidates.

BECU Comes to Newcastle Commons in 2018

In a press release last month, BECU announced it will open a Neighborhood Financial Center in the Newcastle Commons next year. 

The 2,800 square-foot financial center will feature BECU's "tellerless" layout, which empowers members to access their accounts in the ways most convenient to them, including ATM, online banking and mobile banking.
