Late September News at PM Press

Following the 35th anniversary of The Clash's Paul Simonon treating his Fender bass like a woodcutter's ax (as featured in Pennie Smith's classic cover photo for London Calling), Randal Doane's Stealing All Transmissions presents a distinctive take on both the history of The Clash and the punk movement. Next, our latest installment in the Outspoken Author series features counterculture icon Paul Krassner's darkly satiric take on two of the most famous crimes of our era: the kidnapping of heiress Patty Hearst, and the shocking assassination of San Francisco's Harvey Milk.

David Hartsough's activist memoir, Waging Peace, is a testament to the difference one person can make and his stories will undoubtedly inspire, educate, and encourage readers to find ways to work for a more just and peaceful world. And finally, on the heels of the Global Climate Convergence, we are pleased to join the fight against tar sands "development" in North America with A Line in the Tar Sands.

We have a plethora of great news, reviews, and events. We can't list everything happening in one email, but click on the relevant images for more info or check it all out HERE.

Tar Sands A Line in the Tar Sands: Struggles for Environmental Justice
Edited by Joshua Kahn Russell, Stephen D'Arcy, Tony Weis, and Toban Black with a foreword by Naomi Klein and Bill McKibben
Paperback | ISBN: 9781629630397 | $24.95

The fight over the tar sands in North America is among the epic environmental and social justice battles of our time, and one of the first that has managed to quite explicitly marry concern for frontline communities and immediate local hazards with fear for the future of the entire planet.

Despite the formidable political and economic power behind the tar sands, many opponents are actively building international networks of resistance, challenging pipeline plans while resisting threats to Indigenous sovereignty and democratic participation. Including leading voices involved in the struggle against the tar sands, A Line in the Tar Sands offers a critical analysis of the impact of the tar sands and the challenges opponents face in their efforts to organize effective resistance.

Contributors include: Angela Carter, Brian Tokar, Christine Leclerc, Clayton Thomas-Muller, Crystal Lameman, Dave Vasey, Emily Coats, Eriel Deranger, Greg Albo, Jeremy Brecher, Jess Worth, Jesse Cardinal, Lilian Yap, Linda Capato, Macdonald Stainsby, Martin Lukacs, Matt Leonard, Melina Laboucan-Massimo, Rae Breaux, Randolph Haluza-DeLay, Rex Weyler, Ryan Katz-Rosene, Skihitowin Awsis, Sonia Grant, Tyler McCreary, Winona LaDuke, and Yves Engler.

"Avoiding 'game over for climate' requires drawing a line in the tar sands sludge. A Line in the Tar Sands makes clear why and how this tar sands quagmire could be the beginning of the end for the mighty fossil fuel industry."

Stealing
Stealing All Transmissions: A Secret History of The Clash
Randal Doane with a foreword by Barry "The Baker" Auguste
Paperback | ISBN: 9781629630298 | $15.95

Stealing All Transmissions is a love story. It's the story of how The Clash fell in love with America, and how America loved them back. The romance began in full in 1977, when select rock journalists and deejays aided the band's quest to depose the rock of indolence that dominated American airwaves. This history situates The Clash amid the cultural skirmishes of the 1970s and culminates with their September 1979 performance at the Palladium in New York City. This concert was broadcast live on WNEW, and it concluded with Paul Simonon treating his Fender bass like a woodcutter's ax.

Stealing
represents a distinctive take on the history of punk, for no other book gives proper attention to the forces of free-form radio, long-form rock journalism, or Clash bootleg recordings, many of which are now widely available on the web. This story, which takes its title from the 1981 single "Radio Clash," includes original interviews with key figures from the New York punk scene. This secret history concludes with an analysis of how we listen to music today and its impact on the written word.

"Stealing All Transmissions is unlike anything else you've ever read about The Clash. The maneuvers by American radio DJs, music journalists, and record company execs are deftly woven into the band's own story."
----Barry "The Baker" Auguste, roadie for The Clash

Krassner Patty Hearst & The Twinkie Murders: A Tale of Two Trials
Paul Krassner
Paperback | ISBN: 9781629630380 | $12.00

Patty Hearst & The Twinkie Murders is a darkly satiric take on two of the most famous cases of our era: the kidnapping of heiress Patty Hearst, and the shocking assassination of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and gay leader Harvey Milk. As a reporter for the Berkeley Barb, Paul Krassner was ringside at the spectacular California trials. Krassner's deadpan, hilarious style captures the nightmare reality behind the absurdities of the courtroom circus.

Using his infamous pen and investigative chops, Krassner gets to the truth behind the events: the role of the police and FBI, the real deal with Patty and the SLA, and what really happened in Patty's infamous closet.

Also featured is our Outspoken Interview, an irreverent and fascinating romp through the secret history of America's radical underground. Names will be named.

"Krassner is an expert at ferreting out hypocrisy and absurdism from the more solemn crannies of American culture."
----New York Times

wagingpeace Waging Peace: Global Adventures of a Lifelong Activist
David Hartsough with Joyce Hollyday, foreword by John Dear, introduction by George Lakey, and afterword by Ken Butigan
Paperback | ISBN: 9781629630342 | $20.00

David Hartsough knows how to get in the way. He has used his body to block Navy ships headed for Vietnam and trains loaded with munitions on their way to El Salvador and Nicaragua. He has crossed borders to meet "the enemy" in East Berlin, Castro's Cuba, and present-day Iran. He has marched with mothers confronting a violent regime in Guatemala and stood with refugees threatened by death squads in the Philippines.

Waging Peace is a testament to the difference one person can make. Hartsough's stories inspire, educate, and encourage readers to find ways to work for a more just and peaceful world. Inspired by the examples of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., Hartsough has spent his life experimenting with the power of active nonviolence. It is the story of one man's effort to live as though we were all brothers and sisters.

"Peace will only come when all of us become the change we wish to see in this world. David Hartsough became that change and has spent the best part of sixty years working to bring peace to our troubled world. His book is one that every peace-loving person must read and learn from."

Strike!
Strike! on Booklist
Review by Diego Bez
Jeremy Brecher's riveting primer on modern American labor history catalogs U.S. workers' movements from the railroad strikes and Great Upheaval of July 1877 to the mass demonstrations and Haymarket affair of 1886 to Great Depression protests and Vietnam-era revolt to Occupy Wall Street. Brecher dives inside the everyday struggles of rank-and-file workers and provides a thoroughly researched, alternative history rarely mentioned in textbooks or popular media. An important compendium, to be read alongside Howard Zinn, Naomi Klein, and Noam Chomsky.

The System in Library Journal
Review by Thomas L. Batten
Following a huge cast of characters from every tier of urban life, Peter Kuper presents an absolutely epic tale, all the more impressive for being sans dialog or captions. Kuper's characters navigate a city in which each brief meeting or missed connection serves as another link in a chain connecting every life, escalating in some cases to moments of grace and in others to catastrophe. Illustrating in a distinctive stencil and street art-influenced style, Kuper manages to pack an incredible amount of detail into every panel. The System has the heft of a literary novel and should be embraced by both comics fans and readers of literary fiction.

Futures
Futures Reviewed in Publishers Weekly
British author John Barker ventures into fiction with this acerbic look at Thatcher's Britain. In 1987 London, posh stock traders mix comfortably with polished criminals, and cocaine fuels already out-of-control self-confidence. The profit potential of a grand drug deal is irresistible, particularly with the advent of the cocaine futures market. Single mother Carol Curbishley, a minor drug dealer attracted to the riches of a life of crime, is pulled into the middle of one such deal... Carol faces some difficult choices when the stock market crashes and a hurricane hits London. Barker's characters ring true and his story is an enthralling portrait of an era whose legacy still haunts us.

Selma James Interviewed in the Occupied Times
"There is no capitalist crisis. There is a working class crisis. You know, they're getting richer and richer----they're not in crisis. We are in crisis because we have not worked out how to build the movement in a way which will not turn out to be the opposite of what we intended. That's our crisis. Every single movement we have built, has turned into 'a whip for your own back.' So that all of the movements are now headed by people who sit down and negotiate with the enemy and then, if they don't, the media says the leaders are 'irresponsible.' Irresponsible means you have not sold out your membership.

Stealing All Transmissions on Spectrum Culture
Review by John L. Murphy
How did the late '70s arrival of The Clash to a nation they loved and who loved them, in Randal Doane's phrase, jostle the privileged perch granted FM free-form radio and long-form rock journalism in American popular culture? Doane attempts to answer this complex topic in Stealing All Transmissions: A Secret History of The Clash. He matches an affection for what was pitched as "the only band that matters" with a professor's determination to apply theory and scholarship about popular culture to the band's American impact.

WW3
World War 3 Illustrated in Library Journal
Review by M.C.
For the past 35 years, World War 3 Illustrated has published progressive comics commentary on macro and micropolitical struggles, and this anniversary anthology presents 80+ selections grouped roughly by theme. Police brutality, environmental issues, women's empowerment, 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the Occupy movement, for example, all come to life here in personal as well as broader narratives. ...this disturbing yet stirring sampler of views, topics, and techniques for activist comics should prove enlightening and inspirational reading.

Towards Collective Liberation in Peace News
Review by Milan Rai
Towards Collective Liberation is a wonderful, generous book, richly deserving of study and discussion and committed action. As a middle-class man, I am inspired by the challenging precedents that FNB, Heads Up, the Fairness Campaign, Catalyst and others in the book have forged for the rest of us to learn from. As a person of color, I am full of respect for the principled anti-racist work, the stumbling and recovering, described here.

Denmark Reacts to Turning Money into Rebellion
Gabriel Kuhn's recently published book, Turning Money into Rebellion: The Unlikely Story of Denmark's Revolutionary Bank Robbers is receiving press in Denmark. The book focuses on the exploits of the Blekingegade Group, a small circle responsible for a series of robberies stretching from 1972 to 1988. All of the money acquired in the spectacular heists was transferred to Third World liberation movements. The actions of the Group and the subsequent legal procedures left a strong mark on Danish society, affecting everyone from activists to law enforcement agencies.
