Stories for September, 2017
Save A Life With Love
By: Allison Fiete, LMHC
September is National Suicide Prevention Month, with September 10th marking the specific World Suicide Prevention Day. This is a time during each year when people particularly strive to discuss warning signs of suicidal ideation, help lines, available counseling services, the impact of suicide attempts and suicide completion, and other related issues. While it is of course helpful to pay extra attention at times and make the effort to remind yourself of available resources, suicide prevention is not a once-a-year event. It is something that must be practiced at all times throughout the year. Part of suicide prevention involves a way of thinking that every individual should take on in their day-to-day life.

New Beginnings

" Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall." This quote is one of my favorites from F. Scott Fitzgerald.  Saying goodbye to summer is always bittersweet, although the fall is a perfect time for a fresh start! Most of us associate the New Year with a fresh start, but why not take a jump start to get back on track. Autumn means a shift in temperature, the leaves changing colors; and the opportunity to re-evaluate goals, interests, careers, hobbies, relationships and more. But how do we get out of "summer mode" and into accepting autumn?
  1. Grieve the Loss of Summer: Try to squeeze in any last minute adventures while you can! Take time to look back and remember all of the fun events from the summer. Creating a scrapbook or collage is a fun way to reminisce while making a keepsake for the future.
  2. Set Goals: The summer months can be very busy and it can be easy to lose sight of personal goals. Use the S.M.A.R.T. method to set new goals that are specific, measureable, achievable, relevant and timely. If you're feeling stuck, check out the TED Talk, Fake it Till You Make it, by Amy Cuddy for a quick confidence boost!
  3. Try New Things: There are plenty of fun fall activities to try in upstate NY such as apple picking, pumpkin carving, haunted houses and more! Check out something new or take a friend who has never been!
  4. Self-Care: Anticipating the winter months and the holidays can be stressful, so it is best to proactive and implement positive self-care habits such as maintaining healthy sleep schedules, dieting and making time for hobbies, exercise and time with friends and family.
Feeding The Young Athlete
By: Deb Ahola, MS, RD, CDN

By now we all know the importance of physical activity for our children.  Children who are physically active and/or involved in organized sports having lower rates of obesity and generally have better overall health than their sedentary peers.  Children who participate in physical activity on a regular basis need to be receiving adequate and appropriate nutrition not only support their increased needs due to activity levels, but to support their continued growth and development.  Children need to consume a mix of foods to support a higher level of activity, but that mix may not be too different from a simply healthy diet. However, kids and teens who are involved in all-day competitions or strenuous endurance sports (like rowing, cross-country running, or competitive swimming) that can involve 1½ to 2 hours or more of activity at a time,  may need to consume more food to keep up with increased energy demands. Macronutrients, micronutrients and fluids in the proper amounts are essential to provide energy for growth and activity. To optimize performance, young athletes need to learn what, when and how to eat and drink before, during and after activity.

September Fitness Tip

group_cycle_class_2.jpg Approximately one-third of U.S. adults suffer from high blood pressure, which significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Engaging in cardiorespiratory exercise 3-7 days per week for at least 20-60 minutes per session has proven to be incredibly effective at reducing high blood pressure, and you don't necessarily need to torture yourself on the treadmill to do it! Find something you love such as hiking, swimming, or biking. Anything that gets your heart pumping!
