The Common Application
The following message was sent to all Chief Admission Officers, Policy Contacts, and Tech Contacts on September 13, 2013.

Last night we released several new system enhancements. Among these is the ability to view current and prior year statistics. To help you put these numbers in the appropriate context, this message will review the differences in terminology and submission processes between last year and this year.

  • Suspect: A user who has added your institution to My Colleges. (Last year these users were called Prospects.)
  • Prospect: A user who has indicated an enrollment term and decision plan on your Member Screen. (Last year there was no equivalent status.)
In order to allow members to compare "apples to apples" to the greatest extent possible, we are loading last year's prospect numbers as suspects into this year's system. There are no historical prospect statistics this year, since the term as we now define it did not exist last year.
  • Applicant: A user who has submitted a Common Application, Member Questions, and a Payment/Fee Waiver to your institution. (Last year applicants did not necessarily need to submit a payment or their Common Application supplement in order to submit an application. This year, while a college's Writing Supplement (if applicable) may be submitted after students submit their application, the Member Questions and Payment/Fee Waiver must be submitted at the same time as the rest of the application.)
Because the application submission process requires more from students than last year's for most members, many members may see a decline in day-to-day applicant comparison numbers in advance of their deadline.

We recognize the importance of this data in your enrollment planning, so we hope this information will provide you necessary context when sharing this year's data with others within your institution, such as your president or chancellor.

Sincerely,
Rob Killion
