Glimpses of MCS from

WALK-A-THON
Here is just one example of a letter written by one of our students to accompany the school donation request letter for the Walk-a-Thon.  Thank you to our teachers for taking the time to help students add a personal touch to each letter sent out.  Parents, it's not too late to send more addressed, stamped envelopes to the school!  Let's build on this student's enthusiasm and let the unique story of Monroe Christian School spread.

Dear family and friends,

I have been attending Monroe Christian School for three and a half years, and it has been an outstanding school to get me ready for next year. There have been some experiences that have prepared me for high school, and those include my teachers, the service work done here, and my amazing friends.

One big part is my teachers. Mrs. Moses teaches math and science, and she pushes us to work hard. Mrs. Rodrigues teaches us reading and history, and allows us to have fun as long as we get our work done. And Mrs. Froelich trains us while teaching Bible and English. I have outstanding teachers that help me prepare for high school.

Another part is the service work done at MCS. In junior high we do service projects which are services done for others. Some examples of service projects are putting the flag up on the pole and being a morning greeter. We also do PGMTT, meaning Please Give Mine to Them, which is a donation system for good causes. At MCS even the parents do services for the school like being a recess monitor or a teacher's assistant. In my opinion, my school does a big amount of service work.

One huge benefit of attending MCS is the friendships that I will take with me into high school. My friends and I have learned to forgive one another when we've offended each other. This has taught us to trust each other. My friends are funny, and they even laugh at my cheesy jokes. I look forward to see our friendships grow.

I believe MCS is doing a great work in the lives of many students. I believe by the beginning of next year, I will be prepared for high school. This letter is in support of our annual Walk-a-Thon which is a fundraiser for the school. A donation of any size would be greatly appreciated.

God bless you,
William Nelson

WALK-A-THON UPDATE
We mailed out 188 letters today!  We've also received digital delivery forms from 24 families. Thank you! We have already started to receive donations!  If you have not yet sent in your letter/forms, please do so ASAP, so potential supporters have time to send in their donation.

Biggest needs for the Walk-a-Thon event: Two propane grills, set-up crew (start at 1:00 at the school), two more coolers.  There are other needs as well. If you can help, please contact Jennifer Simpson at [email protected] or (cell number).
ROUND-ABOUT
When dropping off or picking up students in the round-about, please remember pull as far forward as possible to stay in your car. The staff member or volunteer will help your child get out of the car. If you wish to assist getting your child/ren out of the vehicle, please park in a designated parking area. (Remember that "reserved" spots are for staff only due to the safety issue of cars backing out.) If grandparents or others are dropping off or picking up, please relay this information to them as well.  Thank you for your cooperation.
FRIDAY ARRIVAL
The students leave the school for Chapel right after the 8:30 bell on Fridays. If you are running late, please take your child directly to Chapel. Mrs. Sytsma will be watching for you and is able to assist until 8:45. Thank you.
FAMILY MENTOR PROGRAM
Help the New families of MCS settle in - become a Mentor Family! Responsibilities include introducing yourself to your mentor family, providing them with your contact information (phone, email or both), and being available to answer questions they may have. We encourage you to reach out to them and connect at school activities or even outside of school. Details and information will be provided to you via email including the name and contact information of your new family. Just a few minutes of your time can help make a new family feel they belong to our incredible MCS family!

To volunteer or for additional information, please contact Stashka Lepera at [email protected]  or 206-465-7413.
REMINDER ABOUT REFERRALS
We always encourage parents to refer new families to MCS!  YOU are our best advertisement! Though we have offered referral tuition credit for the referring family and free registration to the new family in the past, we are no longer running those promotions; rather Jennifer Simpson has been retained to promote the school via social media and other avenues. Our budget does not allow us to credit tuition and free registration well. Thank you for your understanding - your testimony about MCS to other families is invaluable!
POPCORN DAY
TAPP's first Popcorn Day will be next Wednesday, September 27th. A bag of popcorn can be purchased for $.50 or popcorn and a Capri Sun for $1.00. Please give your order and money to your teacher at the beginning of the school day on Popcorn Day.
MILK CARDS
The milkman has made his delivery and we now have milk available for the students. Prepaid milk cards are available in the office for purchase. Cards cost $10 and are good for 12 half-pints of milk.
DO YOU WRITE CHECKS TO THE SCHOOL?
Your MCS bookkeeper needs to ask a favor of you. The school uses an electronic scanner to deposit checks, and this scanner is super finicky! If the check is torn at all, bent, or has been stapled, the scanner will not accept the check and/or it will jam the scanner. It will also reject the check if there is writing over any part of the routing/account numbers on the bottom. Thank you for sending your checks in as "clean" condition as possible. It will save a lot of time in requesting replacement checks and reprocessing transactions. Thank you for your help!

LOVE & LOGIC TIP
FROM DR. CHARLES FAY
Have you ever tried to have a talk with another adult who constantly interrupted the conversation with completely unrelated, irrelevant details? Just the other day, I tried to visit with a friend. Every three to five seconds, he'd blurt, "Stop that!" or "Hold on" or "Just wait!" or "What did I say about that?"

Of course, he wasn't saying these things to me. They were directed at his kids.

To be fair to my buddy, this bad habit is easy to fall into. Breaking it requires that we first make a pact that we won't say a single word to the kids when they begin to interrupt. Nope. Not a single word...or even glance their way.

Of course, their interrupting will get much worse in the short term! When this happens with small children, we can buckle them into the stroller or high chair... or we can gently put them in their playpen or room. All of this is done with no words or excess attention given to the tots.

With older children, we often have to grit our teeth and manage to get through the conversation as best we can... despite all of the whining going on around us. When we're finally done, we can say to them, "This is so sad. You guys really drained our energy by how you behaved when your mom and I were talking. How are you planning to replace that energy?"

Dr. Charles Fay

Parents, this happens to us at school, too. When students interrupt adults as they speak (parent and teacher or teacher and teacher), we will hold up our hand to remind them that adults are speaking and they need to wait patiently. If we are interrupted again, we will say, "This is sad. Please sit down and I will talk to you when we are finished." The teacher will follow up with the student after adult conversation. We are pleased to partner with you as we train up this next generation.
