Streakin' Johnny Hard Cider wins Cider of the Year! Streakin' Johnny Cider of the Year

Less than a year after its initial release, Von Jakob's Streakin' Johnny Hard Apple Cider is already racking up awards. Von Jakob's newest product received a trophy for the Fruit Wine of the Year, along with a Double Gold Medal and Best-of-Class Honors, at the Indy International Wine Competition held in late July. With over 2300 entries from 40 states and 15 countries, Indy International is the largest scientifically organized and independent wine competition in the United States. Fifty prestigious judges, ranging from wine writers, wine producers, enologists, chefs, retailers and consumers, came together to judge this year's competition. Earlier in July, Streakin' Johnny earned Best-of-Class Honors and a Silver Medal in the Illinois State Fair Wine Competition.
Picking Season Von Jakob Apple Orchards

Apple picking season is upon us! With over 5 acres of apple orchards, we will be picking our Jonathan apples in the coming weeks. The apple crop this year is shaping up to be a good one. We are extremely excited about the high quality and production of apples this season since this means that we will be able to produce more of our Johnny Apple Wine and Streakin' Johnny Hard Apple Cider. It couldn't have come at a more opportune time as we are going to be distributing our Double Gold winning Hard Cider in the Southern Illinois area starting in September! So look for both Southern Illinois grown and produced products in retail stores near you.
Von Jakob uses Fresh Local Ingredients Von Jakob's Vegetable Garden

For years we've been using the freshest ingredients from our very own onsite vegetable and herb gardens. Our
vegetable garden, seen in the picture here, produces         tomatoes
cucumbers, squash, peppers and more. Our herb garden produces fresh herbs like rosemary, sage, mint, oregano; all of which is used in our food items. We take pride in growing our very own vegetables and herbs and feel like the quality of these ingredients is what truly sets our food apart from others.
Von Jakob is GREEN!

For years now we've been recycling our wine bottles in order to cut down on waste. We decided many years ago that we would do our part on reducing waste by taking on this challenge. We now take the time to hand wash on average around 40,000 bottles per year that would have otherwise ended up in the trash.

Most recently we decided to continue our Green Initiative as we have now incorporated into our lunch service compostable plates and utensils made from sugar cane and bamboo respectively. This not only creates less waste but it dramatically decreases the amount of energy and water consumed. We look forward to looking into ways to continue our Green Initiative and will keep you updated as we proceed.
Frank Wesseln Head Brewer Von Jakob Brewery
Employee Spotlight
Frank Wesseln, Head Brewer

Frank grew up on a farm in Southern Illinois, and has been around agriculture his whole life.  While attending SIUC to obtain a B.S. in Geographic Information Science, Frank took a class pertaining to grape growing and wine making that sparked a huge interest in fruit growing and most especially in fermentation science.  This led to a part-time job with Von Jakob in the beginning of 2010.
Frank is absolutely fascinated by yeast and fermentation. His first homemade wine was over 5 years ago, and his first home-brewed beer was shortly made after. Countless hours of reading, studying and hundreds of gallons of home-brew later, Frank has become the Head Brewer at Von Jakob Brewery.

"My favorite thing about working at Von Jakob is definitely production.  I have always liked working with my hands and have been interested in science and technology.  Beer production combines all those things in a way that allows someone to be able to enjoy the final product."

Frank's Von Jakob Favorites
Wine: Cave Creek
Beer: Oktoberfest
Lunch Menu: Smoked Pork Sausage
Dinner Menu: Ribeye Steak with Lobster Tail

Although these favorites are constantly changing.....
