Looking Out For Your Eyes

Protecting your eyesight as you age might be more important to your health and quality of life than you realize. Older people with poor eyesight often have to curtail activities that bring them joy and a sense of independence. According to the CDC's publication, The State of Vision, Aging and Public Health in America, elderly people experiencing vision loss are more likely to have other health problems, suffer from falls or other injuries, be depressed and/or socially withdrawn and even have a higher mortality rate. Given what is at stake, making an annual visit to the eye doctor seems like it should be a no brainer. Read more about protecting your eyesight on our blog!

Heart Healthy Recipe

Homemade smoothies are a wonderful way to boost your daily intake of fruits and veggies. They are easy to make ahead of time and provide a great opportunity to experiment with different types of produce you wouldn't normally eat. Here is a healthy favorite--just blend everything together and store in the fridge!

  • kale, rinsed
  • 2-3 beets, peeled and quartered
  • coconut water-to desired consistency
  • bag of frozen rasberries
  • bag of frozen tropical fruits such as banana, mango, or strawberries
  • touch of honey

Permission to Veg Out!
Fruits & Veggies-More Matters!

This September, we wanted to spread the word about the health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. People who eat a healthy, balanced diet - including plenty of vegetables and fruits - can lower their risk for some
certain chronic diseases, like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Did you know?
  • Only 1 in 3 adults eats the recommended amount of fruit each day
  • Only 1 in 4 adults eats the recommended amount of vegetables each day

So how much should you be eating? Everyone's requirements are different, click here to find out what your daily needs are. For example, the average 65 year old female needs 1.5 cups of fruit and 2 cups of veggies a day. For help getting your serving sizes right, the CDC's Nutrition for Everyone section can tell you how much to eat to hit your goal. Homemade smoothies are a quick and easy way to boost your daily intake--have one with breakfast to get your day started off on the right track.

The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty

Editorial Review from Barnes & Noble:

"My darling Cecilia, if you're reading this, then I've died...." Her husband had not intended that she read the letter until after his demise, but Cecilia's curiosity betrayed him. The unsettling words that she read forever changed the life of this once contented wife and mother; yet this well-intended posthumous missive also becomes the spur that enables Cecilia to connect with two other women recently pushed towards crossroads. A new novel by Liane Moriarty (What Alice Forgot; The Hypnotist's Love) as original and well-crafted as a fine string quartet.
