CONFERENCE BUZZ

Jo-Anne and Krista (below) attended the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine last week, along with more than 1000 others. A great catch-up on all things motor development and truly interactive using the conference app. Some pretty consistent buzz words used: dosing (timing and intensity of active treatment), green light (level 1 practice evidence), widespread use of Goal Attainment Scaling and Canadian Occupational Performance Measure and of course the ubiquitous iPad...
P.S. Does early preventive surgery prevent hip dislocation? YES.

REHAB FUN FACT

Velcro was invented in 1941 when a clever Swiss engineer's dog came home with burrs on his coat. Instead of bringing his dog to a salon for a doggy makeover, he invented the hook and loop fastener --- now used everywhere by OTs for splinting, for mounting switches, for holding stuff and putting things within reach. P.S. There is still that issue with the dog hair though....
COOL REHAB PRODUCT
We saw many cool products at the REE this year. Active Controls has a new Chin Control proportional joystick. This joystick was easy to drive and was centre-mounted, which was ideal for set-up. The mount was also very sturdy and easily removeable for transfers!  Here are some photos. Check out their website if you would like more information.
