"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us."                              Hebrew 12: 1
The book of Hebrews was written to a church that was growing disheartened. The first generation of witnesses had believed earnestly that world would welcome the Christian faith and the promises of Jesus Christ.  Instead, they were challenged by increased resistance and persecution. Marginal members were falling away, and even once faithful worshipers were discovering less demanding alternatives.
The author of Hebrews chose to use the language of the sports world to help the Christian community reflect on the challenges of faith.  The race of faith is not a sprint, but it is a marathon.  Along the way, we are supported by men and women who inspire us by their example, and encourage us to keep up the perseverance.
Throughout the liturgical "ordinary time" of summer, I have preached on the saints whose stories serve as the inspiration for this marathon.  They are the great cloud of witnesses who offer the encouragement to dare to run.  But like every sports activity, it all begins by becoming involved and taking the first step.
Rally Sunday is wonderful way of reminding people that the programs and activities of the congregation are organized to help them run the race of faith. Congregational celebrations, Bible studies, choir rehearsals and service activities, all have a way of bringing people together to share their thoughts and experiences and to encourage them to keep up the race.  Joining is important, not simply for you, but for what you can offer to others on their spiritual journey.
So join us on Sunday, September 11th as we begin our renewed journey at Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church.  Come and celebrate Dixieland music with the Madson Family.  Enjoy fresh pie and ice cream.  Register for Sunday School.  Join the choir or prayer group.  There are many ways to explore your faith and to experience the excitement of lives running together in faith.  And in all these ways, you will prepare yourself to for distance that is ahead. .
Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

The informal study of  theology and "adult beverages" will be begin again this fall.  Following the model of Luther in his home in Wittenberg, Germany, Pastor Haug will lead a twice monthly gathering at the Parsonage.  The first gathering will be at 7:30 on Thursday, September 15th.
Conversation and Cuisine is a casual evening of getting better acquainted while enjoying a meal in our homes (or choice of a restaurant).  Groups of 5-7 members and friends of Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church gather for three meals during the course of the year.   Four groups were formed this past year and from all reports, it sounds like they really enjoyed their time together.  New groups will be formed so that everyone will have a chance to get to know some more Lake of the Isles members.  If you would like to participate in the 2016-2017 groups, please let Janna Haug know by September 30 th at the latest.  You can talk to her during church coffee or contact her by email (jannahaug@yahoo.com)
We are delighted to introduce you to our new Nursery Attendant - Sheridan Swee!   Sheridan is currently a student at the University of MN and was a beloved Sunday School teacher here at LOTI during her high school years.  She loves working with children and is excited to connect with our little ones and their families at LOTI.   Nursery is provided every week in the Christy Room during worship.  Sheridan will be there to welcome you and care for your little ones during worship.

Sunday School Registration Open Now.
If you haven' t done so already......it's time to register for Sunday School!  We are looking forward to starting S unday School on Rally Sunday, September 11. Sunday School is offered for children who are  age 3 by September 1 through those entering 6th grade.  We ask all families to register their children for Sunday School.  You can click  here  to get to the online form. Paper copies are also available at both entrances to the Sanctuary.  If you have any questions, please contact Diane LaMere at dlamere.loti@yahoo.com or call the church office at 612-377-5095.

Sunday School Teachers Needed.
We are still in need of Sunday School teachers!  If you love looking with children, please consider being a Sunday School teacher.  High school youth and adults (of all ages!) are invited to be a part of a teaching team for a Sunday School class.  Training is provided (Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 7pm) and detailed lesson plans are given in advance each week.  Teachers do not teach every week - instead they create a teaching schedule with their teaching team that fits everyone's schedule.  Substitute teachers are available when there is a conflict on a given Sunday for the teaching team.  Volunteer forms are available at both entrances of the Sanctuary.  Please contact Diane LaMere at dlamere.loti@yahoo.com or call the church office at 612-377-5095 to sign up to teach or to be a substitute teacher.
Key September Sunday School Dates:
September 7:   Sunday School teacher and substitute teacher training (7-8 pm)
September 11: 1st day of Sunday School
September 18: Bible Presentation in worship (3 year olds, 3rd graders and new families)

The pie and ice cream social will again be held on Rally Sunday, September 11th.  We will need pie contributions so it's time to start thinking about what kind of pie you'd like to make.  Contact Linda in the church office and let her know if you will be bringing a pie.  We also need volunteers to help set-up, serve and clean-up.  Talk with Wendy Westerberg and Margaret Coleman, who are planning to make home-made ice cream, if you would like to participate in doing that.

2:00 P.M.
The Isles Ensemble was founded in 2004.  The Ensemble is a group of some of the finest musicians from the Twin Cities who present a series of Sunday afternoon concerts at Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church.  Chamber music is their passion and their mission is to help build a vibrant chamber music community in the Twin Cities.  The first concert of the season is September 18th and the program is:

Beethoven - String Quartet in Bb major, Op. 18, No. 6
Ravel - Sonata No. 2 for Violin and Piano
Dvorak - Viola Quintet in Eb major, Op. 97

There will be a reception following the concert in Fellowship Hall.
