Advocacy Opportunities

Each year the Governor's Council on Disability distributes a Legislative Priorities Poll to assist the Governor's Council on Disability in understanding issues important to Missourians with disabilities and those who work and live with them.

Please take a moment to complete this survey online by clicking here.

Completed polls must be received by the close of business on Friday, October 28, 2016. Feel free to distribute this to your colleagues, clients/consumers/patients, and any other interested parties.
Health News from DPI

Developing Potential considers both Health and Wellness an integral part of supporting individuals during their day at our program.  In order to support everyone, we provide multiple activities throughout the week:  gross motor activities, Exercise Club, Healthy Lifestyles Club, opportunities to access health and wellness activities in the community, and nutritional cooking projects.

Exercise Club meets weekly and gives individuals the opportunity to move in a variety of ways.  Activities include dance, yoga, Wii fitness, scooters, relay races, and videos.  Team members adapt each movement to fit the abilities of each individual so that everyone can be involved.

Healthy LifeStyles Club takes exercise club a step further.  This is a new club that we are piloting at DPI in 2016-2017.  This group is made up of a few people and a team member that really want to focus on their overall health.  Group members meet at least once a week and talk about topics such as portion size, healthier food choices, and weight management.   Part of this club's activities is setting individual goals and taking steps to achieve those goals weather it is weight loss, eating healthier, or finding new forms of fitness.  Another aspect of this club is monitoring items such as weight, BMI, blood pressure, and heart rates.

Each week, individuals can participate in a cooking project, this gives them the chance to try new and different foods they may have never eaten.  During this time, teams follow a recipe and are able to discuss topics such as food groups and why it is important to incorporate a wide variety of foods in our diet.  Once the project is complete everyone gets the chance to sample their hard work.

DPI is always looking for new and fun opportunities to share a holistic approach to health and wellness with individuals served.  This includes welcoming the community into our sites to discuss nutrition, lead yoga sessions, or demonstrate dance techniques.
