HFHMV Excited for United Way Day of Caring
Friday, September 2, 2016

The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley will host its annual Day of Caring Friday. The day kicks off with a breakfast at the Covelli Centre at 8 a.m.

Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley will be participating again in this event. This year volunteers from the Youngstown Junior League, YSU's Pete's Pride, Park Vista Nursing Home, and L. Calvin Jones will be helping us with projects at the ReStore and at our rehab on Lake Road in Austintown.

"The Day of Caring provides what is often missing in volunteer efforts and in neighborhood clean-ups: the thousands of man (and woman) hours that make such a dramatic and immediate impact in and on our city neighborhoods," said Youngstown Mayor John McNally.

Volunteers will clean debris and overgrown properties, board vacant buildings and, in homes, install smoke detectors provided by the American Red Cross, as well as take care of landscaping and remodeling work at 16 nonprofit agencies, including Potential Development, HFHMV, YWCA of Youngstown and Youngstown CityScape. We will be posting an update with pics in next month's newsletter so be watching for details!

HFHMV is always looking for great volunteers year-round, email [email protected] or visit our website for more information.
Habitaters Work Hard & Play Hard
Monica, Colin, and Scott Tackle the IRONMAN 70.3 Ohio

The IRONMAN 70.3 Ohio was held on Sunday, August 21st, 2016 in Delaware, OH which offered a beautiful course in a quaint location.

On August 21st HFHMV Executive Director, Monica Craven, along with Colin Penney, HFHMV Director of Programs and Scott Craven, Habitat for Humanity of Portage County Construction Manager (and also Monica's husband) all completed the IRONMAN 70.3 Ohio. All three have trained for months. Blood, sweat, and tears went into numerous hours of swimming, biking, and running to build them up physically as well as mentally. All of their hard work and dedication was evident as each of them crossed that finish line.

HFHMV couldn't be prouder of their accomplishments! They are ALL rock stars!

An IRONMAN 70.3 consists of
a 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim, a 56-mile (90 km) bike ride, and a 13.1-mile (21.1 km) run. The time needed by an athlete to complete a 70.3 distance event varies from race to race and can be influenced by external factors. These factors include the terrain and the total elevation gained and lost on the course, weather conditions, and course conditions. Finish times range from sub-4 hour completion times by elite level athletes to the imposed race cut off, which is commonly 8 hours and 30 minutes after the start time.

Colin Penney finished in 7 hours, 1 minute and 9 seconds! Monica Glysson Craven finished in 7 hours, 19 minutes and 32 seconds! Scott Craven finished in 8 hours, 11 minutes and 5 seconds!

Crossing an IRONMAN 70.3 finish line is something few people can claim. IRONMAN is a statement of excellence, passion, and commitment. It shows that when one pushes beyond their boundaries and goes the distance, anything is possible.

What Inspires You to Build with Habitat?
Humans of Habitat Mahoning Valley Launching Soon

We each have our own story or path or journey on why we are inspired to volunteer with Habitat. Regardless if you help on the build site, in the ReStore, during special events, serving on our Board of Directors, sending in a donation, making lunch for a construction crew, etc...everyone plays a part and we at HFHMV couldn't keep supporting our mission of building homes, community, and hope without you! We appreciate you and in the next coming months we'll be launching Humans of Habitat Mahoning Valley to highlight our incredible volunteer and partner family base.

We'd like you to tell us what inspires you about Habitat and serving your community, then watch this newsletter space and social media in the coming weeks for a creative treatment of some of the comments we receive. If you'd like to be involved, email [email protected] with your story.

This is our group of regular volunteers also referred to as "Michael's Minions". We value each and every one of them!

As inspiration, here's some examples of what others have said:

"What's inspiring me is my future. It means family. It means one day being an entrepreneur. It means one day having my own office because I like to write. It means being part of the American dream." - Shamine, future Habitat homeowner

"Annette Lopez. The homeowner of the house built in memory of my mom. She is the one who inspired me to come to Memphis. Her love, strength, care, wisdom, commitment and determination taught me so much on the build site. Her belief in herself, her belief in her daughter and her belief in Habitat for Humanity to change lives inspired me. I wanted to come to Memphis to change lives. To change the lives of people like Annette. Good people. People looking to find their feet. People creating a foundation to catapult themselves and their families into the future. People that understand that we can all change the world, one thing, one house at a time." - Taylor Thompson, a high school senior from Austin, Texas, who raised $85,000 to sponsor an Austin Habitat home in honor of his mom, Maureen, who died with breast cancer. This week, Taylor builds with President and Mrs. Carter.

"Having grown up in Memphis and gone off to college, you really appreciate where you come from. Memphis means so much more to me now. It's great to have a tangible effect on the community. The fact that people with limited experience can do this, it's incredible. You can feel the enthusiasm." - Manoj Gollamudi, Memphis resident, University of Michigan student and Habitat volunteer

"I am the first of my siblings to own a home. I am going to live in this house with my mother, daughters and 2-year-old granddaughter. I think family should stick together. Everyone says they are proud of me. I am proud of myself. Yes I am. Very proud." - Timeka, future Habitat homeowner

"President and Mrs. Carter are truly an inspiration. And people having the chance to own their home. Just to work side by side with them, you see that these are people who have a dignity about them. The home is a springboard for them and their lives." - Kathy Knapp from Evansville, Indiana. This is her 10th Carter Work Project
