2017 IIFA FIATA Diploma Graduation Ceremony

The 2017 IIFA FIATA Diploma Graduation Ceremony took place on Tuesday 5th September 2017 in the Spencer Hotel, Dublin. With a starting class group of 35, 33 participants were successful in attaining the IIFA FIATA Diploma. This was the ninth class group to undertake the IIFA FIATA Diploma course since IIFA offered the course directly to Members in 2008.

FIATA's international training programme is currently offered in 58 FIATA Member Countries. Each Country is required to follow a set of learning requirements to ensure that each of the 58 different programmes meet the same international standard, with an appropriate level of localisation also facilitated. To date there are just over 13,000 FIATA Diploma globally, since 1995. Ireland represents 556 of these Diploma holders, placing our Country among the top performers globally. At a European level, France leads with 1396 Diplomas issued and this close target shows how strong the Irish commitment is education.

Ireland's strong position on this global scale is impressive and this is thanks to the Participants that put themselves forward each year to further their knowledge of their industry and indeed their own careers. IIFA's 2017 - 2018 class group commenced on 30th August 2017, this time with 31 Participants ready to under the 10 month online education programme.

IIFA Launch Customs Awareness and Practical Completion Course

IIFA's Education Committee announced to Members that the Association's Customs Awareness and Practical SAD Completion course is ready for enrolment. This course will comprise two sections; a distance learning Awareness of Customs Clearance and a practical classroom learning of completing SAD entries.

Duration:

6 weeks (combined classroom + distance learning)

Starts on Wednesday 11th October 2017 and concludes on Wednesday 22nd November 2017

Wednesday 11th October 2017 - evening Classroom session in DIT Aungier Street

Monday 8th November 2017 - Online test and Assignment Completion date

Wednesday 15th November 2017 - evening Computer Classroom session in DIT Aungier Street

This training course will comprise two sections:

Course A - Customs Awareness

Beginning with an introductory lecture, this section will comprise a 4 week distance learning course covering the academic side of Customs Clearance. This section will also include an assignment and online test.

Course B - Practical SAD Completion

A classroom based session where Participants are shown how to complete Customs Entries (via use of Thyme IT software) and Participants will also be required to complete their own entries during and after the class session.

CLECAT Working Group on BREXIT has first Meeting

CLECAT's Working Group on BREXIT had its first meeting on 21 September 2017 and IIFA was in attendance at this meeting,

The BREXIT Working Group discussed the challenges of the BREXIT negotiations for the Freight Forwarding and logistics industry, including the impact of various options for the future relationship between the EU and UK. These could include reversion to full WTO rules, whereby the UK would be a third country like any other without a specific agreement with the EU; a free-trade agreement between the EU and UK; and UK participation in the European Economic Area. It was generally felt that a smooth transition to a situation as close to the status quo as possible would be the least disruptive option.

Association Port of Zeebrugge visit Dublin Port

Thursday 5th October 2017

A Delegation from APZI (Association Port of Zeebrugge Interests), the Private Sector Association in the Port of Zeebrugge, will visit Dublin Port on Thursday 5th October 2017 and host a Networking event. The event begins at 10am with a Presentation on the Port of Zeebrugge and will be followed by a B2B Boat Tour and Network Drinks/ Walking Lunch.

IIFA Members are invited by APZI to attend this event and meet the visiting Delegation.

Irish Shipping Volumes rise by 1% in Q2 2017

According to the latest iShip Index published by the Irish Maritime Development Office (IMDO), shipping and port activity in the Republic of Ireland rose by 1% in the second quarter of 2017 when compared to the corresponding period of 2016.

Unitised traffic - which consists of Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro/Ro) and Lift-on/Lift-off (Lo/Lo) traffic - continued to rise, growing by 3% when compared to Q2 2016.

The majority of Ro/Ro traffic moves between Ireland and Great Britain, meaning this freight segment is a simple but reliable indicator as to the level of trade between both economies. The Ro/Ro freight sector for the Republic of Ireland saw volume growth of 3% in the second quarter of 2017. This is the fifth consecutive Q2 increase in this freight category.

As for Lo/Lo (containership) traffic, Lo/Lo exports in the Republic of Ireland (ROI) rose by 7.4% compared to Q2 2016, while Lo/Lo imports remained relatively unchanged - rising by 0.9%. Overall, Lo/Lo traffic in ROI increased by 3.7% to 184,673 TEU.

When reviewing unitised traffic it is worth noting that both Lo/Lo and Ro/Ro freight segments move in an all-island setting. Therefore, when Northern Irish (NI) ports are included, all-island Ro/Ro volumes grew by 2% in Q2 2017. All-island Lo/Lo traffic grew by 3.5%, with all-island imports and exports rising by 1.1% and 6.6% respectively compared to Q2 2016.

NI Ro/Ro volumes grew by 2%, while NI Lo/Lo traffic grew by 2.8%. This was driven primarily by 4% growth in NI Lo/Lo exports.

The Bulk traffic segment saw tonnage volumes decrease by 1% (excluding transhipments) in the Republic of Ireland when compared to the same period last year. This was driven primarily by a 3% fall in Dry Bulk tonnage. Break bulk volumes grew by 3% while liquid Bulk traffic remained stable compared to Q2 2016.

Registration for the 2017 CLECAT Freight Forwarders Forum now Open

CLECAT is inviting the Members of its National Associations, Policy Makers and Stakeholders to join its Annual Forum, which is being organised with the support of the Port of Barcelona, on the 24 th November at the WTC in Barcelona.

Smart and Sustainable Logistics Solutions Through Multimodal Transport is the theme of the 2017 Freight Forwarders' Forum.

Effective multimodality permits forwarders to offer a tailor-made service to their customers, thus improving the flow of goods throughout the European economy and boosting growth. An efficient multimodal transport chain allows goods to bypass congestion, achieving value pricing through economies of scale and a flexibility which serves customer needs first. This furthermore brings important environmental benefits to the supply chain, and achieving seamless multimodality and synchromodality in the transport system will be crucial in meeting Europe's climate commitments. Innovation for multimodality also enables supply chain resilience, by leveraging the supply chain's high-tech information flows to give customs greater accuracy and information on what is being transported and where.

The FFF will hear from several multimodal logistics service providers and operators about what makes their business successful, how they deliver value for their customers. What are the needs in terms of a business environment, regulatory framework and infrastructure connections in order to build a multimodal system. How can innovation drive efficiency, resilience and emissions reduction at the same time? What is needed to boost these developments?

These are the themes and the questions that will be addressed during the Forum gathering different high-level experts speakers, who will set the scene for lively debates with different industry representatives and policy makers.

Tigers Launches Rail Freight Service Linking

Tigers, a Hong Kong based Supply-Chain Specialist, has launched a new rail freight service, called Tiger Rail, offering customers a 16-day transit time both east and westbound, between Duisburg, Germany, and Hefei, Chongqing, and Chengdu, China.

Tiger Rail customers can charter a train, or book Full Container Load or Less than Container Load shipments on weekly scheduled services to and from over 15 origin stations in China.

The Hong Kong-headquartered supply chain specialist is also planning to offer

e-commerce customers shipping parcels from Europe to China a cost-effective service along the new Silk Road.

"We have seized the opportunity to provide integrated logistics for our customers, who increasingly require shorter transit times than ocean freight, and lower costs than airfreight, making Tiger Rail the perfect solution," said Paul Huang, Managing Director, Tigers China.

"Our customers benefit from lower shipping costs by empty container return in Switzerland for westbound services, and Shipper's Own Container (SOC) for eastbound services, for both FCL and LCL.

"Tigers has already supported customers to transport over 500 TEUs as FCL, and 1500 cubic meters (CBMs) as LCL along the new Silk Road."

Tiger Rail's inaugural shipment took place over the summer, on behalf of one of one of the largest manufacturers of exhaust and suspension systems, which chartered a train to transport construction materials, auto parts, and electronics.

"We are currently preparing test shipments for European Union (EU) Business to Consumer (B2C) parcels importing to China with Tiger Rail, and look forward to expanding our rail freight capabilities even further," said Andrew Jillings, Chief Executive Officer and Group Managing Director, Tigers.

The launch of Tiger Rail comes only weeks after Tigers achieved Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) certification in the UK, expanded its footprint with a new office in Leeds, and launched a post-Brexit solution to combat any disruption caused by Brexit.

Stena Line strengthen Freight Network by adding further capacity on the North Sea between Rotterdam and the UK

Earlier this year Stena Line announced the increase to their freight capacity on the route Rotterdam (Europoort) to Harwich January 2018 by replacing the current two RoRo vessels by two larger ships. Stena Line now announces their plans to also increase capacity on the route Rotterdam-Killingholme in January 2018. Stena Line will consequently increase their total capacity from Europoort with some 20%.

A decision has now been taken to introduce a larger RoRo vessel on the North Sea to replace a current chartered ship, the Caroline Russ, when its contract expires in January 2018. Stena Line will furthermore as of next year reposition the RoRo ships between the Europoort routes to further optimize the available capacity. On the route from Rotterdam to Killingholme, which Stena Line started with one vessel in 2014 and which has daily departures since 2016, MV Misida and MV Misana will operate. The new ship will be introduced next to the Stena Scotia on the route Rotterdam - Harwich in January 2018.

Annika Hult, Trade Director at Stena Line North Sea says: "I am very pleased to announce that we will now take the next step in the strategic development of our Rotterdam (Europoort) freight transport hub to the UK."

"We have seen a strong growth in the transport market to the UK over the past several years and we are currently trading at very high utilization on both routes. We further see a good development in freight volumes arriving to Europoort by train. We believe that the combination of rail and RoRo transportation will only increase in the future and our vision is that Europoort will develop into a key rail freight connection point to and from the UK."

"These capacity increases clearly demonstrate our ambitions and we are confident our customers will react positively to our expansion" Annika Hult continues.
