DPI Employment Connections

The Job Accommodation Network (funded by the U.S. Office of Disability Employment Policy) has developed an online tool to help businesses successfully recruit, hire and retain applicants and employees with disabilities. The Workplace Accommodation Toolkit includes sample accommodations, procedures, training videos and examples from leading U.S. businesses for creating an inclusive workplace. The Toolkit provides inclusive practices at various phases of the employment life cycle for hiring managers and supervisors, human resource professionals and advocates.

This tool is a valuable resource to assist employment support professionals with identifying possible supports through career planning and job development; fostering greater independence on job sites and engaging community employers.

DPI Health and Wellness:
Allergies: Not Just a Problem in the Spring
Although fall allergy triggers are different, they can cause just as many symptoms as spring and summer allergies.

Ragweed is the biggest allergy trigger in the fall.  Though it usually starts to release pollen with cool nights and warm days in August, it can last into September and October.  Ragweed pollen can travel for hundreds of miles on the wind, so even if it doesn't grow where you live, it could still affect you.

Mold is another fall trigger.  You may think of mold growing in your basement or bathroom, but mold spores also love wet spots outside.  Piles of damp leaves are ideal breeding grounds for mold.

Don't forget about dust mites.  While they're common during the humid summer months, they can get stirred into the air the first time you turn on your heat in the fall.

Allergy Symptoms:  Runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes and nose, dark circles under the eyes

There are many over the counter (OTC) medications you can use to help ease the symptoms of fall allergies.  As always, you should speak with your doctor before starting any new medications.
  • Nasal sprays can help reduce inflammation in your nose.
  • Antihistamines help stop sneezing, sniffling, and itching.
  • Decongestants help to relieve stuffiness and dry up the mucus in your nose.
Other helpful tips:
  • Stay indoors with the doors and windows closed when pollen is at its peak (usually in the late morning or midday).
  • Before you turn on your heat for the first time clean you heating vents and change the filter.
  • Use HEPA filters in your heating system to remove pollen, mold, and other particles from the air.
  • Use a dehumidifier to keep you air at between 35% and 50% humidity.
  • Wear a mask when you rake leaves so you don't breathe in mold spores.
