Affiliate President Letty Baldaro's Message
Greetings NAMI Glendale,

Our affiliate has been very busy with outreach events. We were at Gene Autry Museum for the 16th Annual American Indian Day Sat. Sept 9. We were there with resources for the Health Fair Thank you to Marilyn Kim, Sylvia Gil, Christine Miranda and Eliana Lopez.

The same day we had a table and outreach at The York Village El Mercado, which was an evening of music, live artists, handmade everything, farmers market and another opportunity to have NAMI resources for the community.  Thank you Kim, Gloria, Tanya and Sylvia.

NAMI Glendale exists because of our great volunteers! But we always need more help, more facilitators, more teachers.  If you are interested in volunteering or just finding out more about how you can help with our mission, please contact Kim Zolna at
Our Summer Family Potluck was a great evening at the home of Jane Hancock. There was an abundance of food, discussion and 49 attending! If you missed this fun evening - look forward to our Holiday Potluck in December! Thank you again Jane for having us and all the many volunteers that helped with that evening.

In our May newsletter, we announced that NAMI Glendale would be participating with NAMI Los Angeles County Council (LACC) and La Piana Consulting about the benefits of consolidating the 12 affiliates in Los Angeles county to one affiliate; NAMI Los Angeles County. I have been attending meetings along with Suzanne Dewalt since January along with other affiliate representatives, Brittney Weissman and the consulting firm.

We have completed our study and now we are preparing to present to our affiliate what this new organization would look like. On Thursday, Oct. 12th at 6:00 pm there will be a presentation at Eagle Rock City Hall that will go into detail of why and how being one entity could be beneficial for our affiliate and for Los Angeles. There will be time for questions and discussion. We are hoping you can attend as we will be having a membership vote on this matter.

Hello Peers,

Welcome back to the Peer Column! It's Eliana again and I wanted to share with everyone a poem I really enjoy. It's called "You and Me" by Debbie Sesula. I invite you to share your thoughts about this poem or anything else for this peer column by sending it to Sylvia Gil the newsletter editor.
You and Me
by Debbie Sesula
If you're overly excited
You're happy
If I'm overly excited
I'm manic.
If you imagine the phone ringing
You're stressed out
If I imagine the phone ringing
I'm psychotic.
If you're crying and sleeping all day
You're sad and need time out
If I'm crying and sleeping all day
I'm depressed and need to get up.
If you're afraid to leave your house at night
You're cautious
If I'm afraid to leave my house at night
I'm paranoid.
If you speak your mind and express your opinions
You're assertive
If I speak my mind and express my opinions
I'm aggressive.
If you don't like something and mention it
You're being honest
If I don't like something and mention it
I'm being difficult.
If you get angry
You're considered upset
If I get angry
I'm considered dangerous.
If you over-react to something
You're sensitive
If I over-react to something
I'm out of control.
If you don't want to be around others
You're taking care of yourself and relaxing
If I don't want to be around others
I'm isolating myself and avoiding.
If you talk to strangers
You're being friendly
If I talk to strangers
I'm being inappropriate.
For all of the above you're not told to take a
pill or are hospitalized, but I am!

NAMI Glendale Mission Statement
NAMI-Glendale is the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness serving Greater Glendale including the adjacent communities of Burbank, Eagle Rock, Echo Park, Garvanza, Glendale, Highland Park, Hollywood, Montrose, North Hollywood, Shadow Hills, Silver Lake, Sunland, and Tujunga.

Our mission is to provide FREE education, support, and advocacy to people with mental illness and their families. We also work to raise awareness about mental illness issues and put an end to stigma.

We recognize that mental illnesses are brain disorders, medical conditions from which recovery is possible.  The trauma of mental illness directly impacts the family, friends and loved ones of the person who has an illness, and these people, too, need help  and can play a pivotal supporting role in an individual's recovery.

Our Goal is to ensure that every person who has a mental illness has adequate access to medical care, medications, therapy, reliable-accurate information, and a supportive community of assistance.

We understand that coping with mental illness can be overwhelming.

We know. We've been there. We can help!
For many of us, finding NAMI-Glendale was the beginning of hope and recovery. NAMI-Glendale provides hope and help through education, support and advocacy.
