Greetings,
As summer rolls into fall and the kids go back to school, change is upon us yet again. In both locations we have news of change about the attached cafes.
In Manchester, we are sorry to announce that after 15 years the Spiral Press Café is closed. BUT, we are working hard to replace it with a new and improved café in the coming months. We have a potential partnership in the discussion phase – I am confident that the community will rejoice when it happens. In the meantime, we apologize for the inconvenience of not having a café.

In Saratoga, we are delighted that Saratoga’s Broadway Deli opened recently. If you haven’t been in, please stop by and taste some of chef Daniel’s treats. Really good lunch sandwiches!

There are many great books coming out these days! One of my favorites is
She Would Be King
by Wayetu Moore, which is coming out on September 11
th
, but which you can pre-order now. This is a fantastic novel about the black experience in three very different places – the US, the Caribbean and, mainly, in Liberia. Amazing characters drive the story of the founding years in Liberia.
I hope to see you in one of the stores,
Chris Morrow

The Widower's Notebook: A Memoir
Sunday, September 30th at 5:00 p.m.
Saratoga Springs, NY
Jonathan Santlofer's memoir is written with unexpected humor and great warmth--a portrait of a marriage, an account of the complexities of finding oneself single again, and a story of the enduring power of familial love.
|
|
"A stupendous novel that is all at once mortifying, hilarious, and ridiculously smart. Our anti-hero, a hedge fund manager named Barry Cohen, is running away (via Greyhound bus) from his loveless marriage and his autistic son with only a small suitcase containing some of his favorite obscenely expensive wristwatches. He is Jay Gatsby written by Jack Kerouac and he knows it. The first Great American post-Obama novel."
— Stan Hynds, Northshire Manchester Center
"Shteyngart presents us with two dreadful people of the 0.1%. They are both trying to escape a miserable marriage by “finding themselves” in the most consciously clichéd way. Barry sets out on a journey across the country, and Seema embarks on an affair. Shteyngart upends their quests for meaning, shows their hollowness, and, surprisingly, makes the reader more or less like them."
— Dafydd Wood, Northshire Manchester Center

From our own Shires Press
|
by Tim McGillicuddy
This book of poems began with wonder and gratitude reflecting on the year- plus that I have lived on bluffs directly overlooking the great Atlantic Ocean on Block Island, and on the rugged New England shore in Cape Cod. It soon occurred to me with equal gratitude and wonder that I have lived on an island in the Atlantic the majority of my life. That island is called Manhattan.
