Supermarket Saturday Food Drives

Date/Time: Saturday, September 15 in one-hour shifts between 9am to 1pm. You may sign-up for multiple shifts

Location: Wallingford QFC, 1801 N 45th St

FamilyWorks Family Resource Center and Food Banks connects neighbors and families to nourishing food, essential resources and a supportive community. Supermarket Saturday food drives are a great opportunity to engage the community in conversations about how the food bank helps our community. Volunteers hand out flyers to shoppers that list the non-perishable goods needed for our food bank. Shoppers then purchase the items and donate them to us.

Ages: Families with children ages five and up are welcome to volunteer.

Northwest Walk to End Alzheimer's
Alzheimer's Association

Date/Time: Sunday, September 29, 6:30 - 11:30am

Location: Seattle Center, 305 Harrison Street, Seattle

The Walk to End Alzheimer's is the world's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future for millions! Volunteers make this event possible in communities across Washington State and Northern Idaho. Families can volunteer as Greeters and Route Marshalls to welcome walkers and guide them through the course route.
 
Ages: Families with children age ten and older are welcome to volunteer.

Weed, Mulch and Prune in NE Seattle
Meadowbrook Community CARE (MC2)
 
Date/Time: Wednesdays and Thursdays each week throughout the year. Contact the volunteer coordinator to arrange your time preference.
 
Location: 10517 35th NE, Seattle

In the northeast community of Seattle, north of University of Washington and bordering Nathan Hale High School, this Seattle Parks location hosts Community Gardens and Orchards on this seven-acre site. In partnership with the community group, Meadowbrook Community Gardens and Orchards (MCGO), Meadowbrook Community CARE is excited to help sustain this urban gardening project in this local community. Tools and adult gloves are provided to volunteers along with a brief history and goals for this northeast Seattle jewel of Seattle Parks. The Orchard site is hilly so volunteers should have good balance and wear sturdy shoes. The community garden is level but does require bending and managing various surfaces.

Help Local Children - Pack, Organize and Distribute Donations
WestSide Baby

Date/Time: There are a variety of dates and times available. Check website for details.

Location: White Center, 10002 14th Ave. SW

WestSide Baby provides essentials to local children in need by collecting and distributing diapers, clothing and equipment. Volunteers are an integral part of the organization and tasks can include sorting incoming donations of clothing and other items, packaging diapers, packaging toys, filling orders for children and other projects as needed.

Ages: Families with children ages eight and older are welcome to volunteer. An adult must accompany volunteers between ages 8-13 and volunteers ages 14-17 must bring a signed consent form.

Sort and Repackage Bulk Food
Northwest Harvest

Location: Kent Warehouse, 22220 68th Ave S, Kent

The mission of Northwest Harvest is to provide nutritious food to hungry people statewide in a manner that respects their dignity, while fighting to eliminate hunger. Their vision is of ample nutritious food that is available to everyone in Washington State. Northwest Harvest is the only nonprofit food bank distributor operating statewide in Washington with a network of more than 375 food banks, meal programs and high-need schools. Through this network, they provide more than two million meals every month. Volunteers will sort and repackage bulk food into family sized portions for distribution to food banks throughout the state. It is incredible to see how many meals you can package in just a few hours!

Ages: Minimum age of nine years old or third grade (whichever comes first). Adult chaperones are required for volunteers up to age 15. Sixteen and 17-year-olds are able to volunteer on their own with a parent permission form on file, however, adult chaperones are needed for groups of 16 and 17-year-olds and one adult is needed to be the primary contact. All volunteers must be scheduled in advance.
 
Time Commitment: Two-hour shifts

Ushering for Public Performances
Seattle Children's Theatre
 
Date/Time: Varies throughout the season; October 2018 - May 2019
 
Location: 201 Thomas St, Seattle

Ushers are needed for public performances on the weekends. Usher duties include any of the following: stuffing and passing out programs, light cleaning of the theatre, ticket taking, stage watching, occasional assisting at concession stands. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the House Manager, so be prepared to be flexible! Ushers typically get to see the show they are ushering for free.

Ages: Families with children 8-13 years of age who are accompanied by a parent or guardian are welcome to volunteer. Teens 14 years of age or older can volunteer on their own.
 
Time Commitment: Between two and one-half and three and one-half hours, depending on the length of the show; all ushers need to be at the theatre one hour and fifteen minutes before the show.

Location: You choose! Simply find a local business, school, place of worship, community center or neighborhood that will allow you to hold your bake sale. It's that simple. We have more ideas for good locations in our Location Guide.

Funds raised through Bake Sale for No Kid Hungry support Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger in America. Nationally, the campaign provides leadership, raises awareness and advocates for change that will make sure no kid in America ever goes hungry. Locally, Share Our Strength funds the most effective anti-hunger organizations and builds partnerships that bring together public officials, nonprofits, community groups, private funders and businesses to end childhood hunger in a particular state or city. Creating a Giving Box

Location: Your home and community

Teach your children the importance of sharing money as well as time. Work together as a family to research causes and issues you care about, and then collect coins for the causes that matter the most to you. Create your own Giving Box to collect your family's charitable donations. When your box is full, decide together where the money will go.
