Ball State CAP Guest Lecture Series featuring Hoosier Troy Thompson, AIA Begins September 11th

The Ball State CAP Guest Lecture Series, which is open and free of charge for AIA members and sponsors, begins Monday, September 11, 12 p.m. - 1 p.m., at the CAP: INDY Connector @ the Platform, 202 E. Market St., Indianapolis, IN (#CAPlatform). This year's first lecture,
We're Not Obsolete . . . yet: Design in the Post-professional World of Design-build & Artificial, will be presented by Indiana native Troy Thompson, AIA, Managing Partner, SmithGroupJJR, CAP Firm in Residence supported by the Emens Distinguished Professorship program. Troy will present a picture of societal trends that are dramatically affecting how design and planning will be delivered in the near future. Technological shifts such as Artificial Intelligence, 3-D printing and the democratization of knowledge will cause the design fields to re-think how design and construction relate to one another. These trends will also force a rethinking of the business model of design firms. Troy will present possible options for how the design office, as we know it today, can and must, evolve toward new practice models.

The John R. Emens Distinguished Professorship was established in 1967 by Ball State University as an expression of appreciation for the leadership and service provided to the University by President John R. Emens, on the occasion of his retirement. The Distinguished Professorship is awarded to one of Ball State University's seven academic colleges each year on the basis of a competitive proposal. The Emens Distinguished Professorship has been awarded to the College of Architecture and Planning for 2017-18 to support a Firm in Residence. SmithGroup/JJR, an interdisciplinary design firm with eleven offices world-wide, will serve as the Firm in Residence, under the leadership of Troy Thompson, SmithGroup/JJR Managing Partner and Ball State College of Architecture and Planning alumni.

Becoming Present: Louis I. Kahn and the Arts United Center

Becoming Present: Louis I. Kahn and the Arts United Center, pays homage to Kahn by sharing the chronological and biographical history of Fort Wayne's Arts United Center. From the art campus' inception in 1959 until now, a pivotal time for the regeneration of cultural change, a much-needed light is shed on the many reasons to support and maintain Louis Kahn's oft-overlooked, albeit monumentally significant, contribution to Fort Wayne. This exhibition explores the integrality of supporting the arts for a stronger, more vibrant community, and the exigency of helping the Arts United Center move with Fort Wayne into the future. Also, a closing party is scheduled for this exhibition September 29 at 6 p.m., featuring a lecture by Zach Benedict, AIA, Principal at MKM Architecture + Design.
