JOINT HEALTH & SAFETY COMMITTEE CERTIFICATION TRAINING
Wilkens Health and Safety Solutions (WHSS) is the only Ministry of Labour (MOL) approved Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Certification training provider located in Kingston.  

As most workplaces with twenty (20) or more workers must have a JHSC established, we regularly hold training sessions. At least one (1) worker and one (1) management representative of this committee must be certified by completing the prescribed training standards set by the MOL.  

Part One  Basic Certification Training 
Part One B asic Certification training  provides an overall knowledge of the Health and Safety Legislation that applies to most workplaces.

Employer Sentenced to One Day in Jail for Unpaid Wages
August 15, 2016

NEWMARKET, Ont. (CP) - A man who runs an Ontario embroidery business has been ordered to serve one day in jail after failing to pay employees more than $30,000.

Kinark Child and Family Services Fined $125,000 After Workplace Violence Incident
August 16, 2016

BURLINGTON, Ontario - Kinark Child and Family Services, an agency providing children's mental health services and support for children and youth in Halton Region and elsewhere in central Ontario, has been fined $125,000 following a workplace violence incident where a staff member was physically assaulted by a youth.   

Important OH&S Update


  Change to the Definition of Harassment 
The amendments made earlier this year in Bill 132: Ontario's New Sexual Violence and Harassment Legislation, come into effect September 8, 2016. 

For employers, important changes will stem from Bill 132's amendments to the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The changes include modifying the current definition of "workplace harassment" and imposing additional obligations on employers concerning their workplace harassment policies, programs and investigations.

Employment Standards Tip 
Minimum Wage Increase
As of October 1, 2016 general minimum wage is increasing to $11.40 per hour. Student minimum wage and liquor servers minimum wage will also increase.

The WSIB Safety Groups program is a great resource to help organizations establish a comprehensive health and safety program. The WSIB Safety Groups program provides structure and results, giving you the knowledge and tools to implement occupational health and safety measures. The program is a performance-based rebate program developed by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). 

Applications  for the 2017 WSIB Safety Groups program can be submitted as of October 1, 2016.
