Autumn's Colors
Second Saturday
Plant Sale  
Sept 13th    9am-1pm
Washington Oaks Gardens

 

Autumn's Colors, combined with Mother Earth's handiwork, displayed in all her grandeur, will be sure to enhance our visitors' experience. Join us for the Friends monthly plant sale!  This sale features a wonderful selection of flowers and bushes together with unusual and hard to find plants for your home, patio or garden. Plants being showcased include Chrysanthemems, violet agapanthus, and dark leaf rubber pants.  Our collection this month has a selection of 'Ti plants' and variegated hibiscus.

 

Visitors may find Florida Natives among the selections on the plant benches. A portion of the plants were propagated and grown in the park thru the efforts of the Friends.  All proceeds benefit the park for enhancement of current and new facilities.

 

Regular park entrance fee includes this plant sale and the majesty of Mother Earth!

Third Saturday Photo Challenge

Sept 20th    ALL DAY

Autumn has begun to show her colors. The Park's gardens and trails have awakened for the enjoyment of our guests. Decisions on what to appreciate first seem impossible to make. As you celebrate Autumn's Colors, use your camera to record Mother Earth's grandeur and offerings within the Park.

 

Participants will receive a map of the Gardens and the Challenge instructions on the day of the event.  The map and instructions will be at the Ranger Station until the park closes.

Participants are encouraged to submit a photo to the challenge, in JPEG format, accompanied by a signed photo release to:

Upon submission photos will be entered into a photo of the month contest.

Music in the Park
September 21st

Billy Buchanan 
& Free Avenue

Expeience an afternoon where Rock & Roll grooving meets Rhythm & Blues in the beautiful setting of Washington Oaks Gardens.  September's concert features "Billy Buchanan & Free Avenue", playing from 2pm-5pm.  Billy and his band are well known and many follow his performances at numerous venues along Florida's east coast. 

Please bring a chair or blanket for your seating peasure!  Chairs will also be provided.  Soda, water and snacks will be sold by the Friends of Washington Oaks.  The Friends Gift Shop and Plant Bench will be open for purchases.

This is a kid friendly event and there wll be a fun play area for kids with bubbles, hula hoops, a painting wall and other fun activities.  

 

Regular park entrance fees apply the day of the show and there is a $1 per person suggested donation for the concert. Please note that future concert prices in the series are subject to change. Reservations are not required. Come support the beautiful park and take part  in this unique music series!


 

Art in the Park!
Drawing Classes

Six Wednesdays:  9:30am - 12:30pm


Learn to draw as a foundation for painting or drawing for it's own sake. First, you will learn to use line and values to draw in black and white: then learn how to see color as values. This is the key to painting realism. Following, the perspective of both formal or linear and atmospheric perspective, gesture, line, value, how to draw anything using five geometric forms will be presented. You will explore how to utilize a sketchbook and discover how to plan a composition for landscape, still-life and more. Whether you want to draw for the sake of drawing, or learn elements and principles of drawing to improve painting skills, you will benefit from time spent in the beautiful and inspirational environment of Washington Oaks Gardens State Park.

 

Classes will be held outside and students will receive group, as well as individual instruction. All of Joan F. Tasca's classes include lectures, demonstrations, art history, and critiques.
 
The fee is $160 for this six week series (park entrance fee included).

Kayaking in Old Florida
 
Faver-Dykes State Park

The Friends of Washington Oaks sponsor wonderful kayak expeditions along the still waters of Pellicer Creek. Come and see why the Pellicer Creek is considered one of the cleanest, most pristine waterways in all of Florida. Certified Master Naturalist guides, using expedition sea kayaks, will take you on a breathtaking leg of that journey.  From river to sea, follow the path of dolphins, sea turtles, fish and eagles during this natural expedition from Faver-Dykes State Park.  Safety is of the highest importance and all levels of kayaking experience will find enjoyment, including first time kayaking adventurers.   

 

The cost is $55 for adults and $45 for youngsters, age 15 years or younger, which includes admission into the park, guide service, and the finest kayaking equipment.  Space is limited!   Call (904)347-1565

National Public Lands Day
Volunteer Workday
Faver-Dykes State Park

September 27th
Saturday - 9:00am-12:00pm

Join thousands of volunteers across the country and take part

in the 21st Annual National Public Lands Day!  Faver-Dykes State Park is one of the many host sites for this national volunteer effort.  The project will involve planting 250 long leaf pines and 250 wire grass plugs around the park. Most of the planting will take place in the woods on rough terrain.

 

Volunteers will meet at the Ranger Station. Upon completion of  the project, participants are welcome to explore and enjoy the Park. We offer many activities for your enjoyment including hiking, biking, fishing, birding, a playground, picnic areas, and boating.

  

There is no charge for participants.  Please bring gloves, hat, sunscreen, and comfortable working clothes.  Drinks and snacks will be provided.
