Rebuilding Together San Francisco provides free repair and renovation programs for low-income, elderly and disabled San Franciscans and for non-profit and community facilities.  The work they do creates safer environments and makes it possible for people to live independently for a longer time in their own homes.  The organization was founded in 1989, just prior to the Loma Prieta earthquake.  Known then as Christmas in April, the organization was created through the grassroots collaboration of several business, labor and community organizations in San Francisco.  With the support and involvement of businesses and individuals, Rebuilding Together sets in motion a cycle of renewal, community-building and civic engagement.  Since 1989, they have rehabilitated more than 2,200 homes and 300 facilities serving tens of thousands of people. Hundreds of civic-minded companies, religious and community groups support their work with financial and in-kind resources.  Executive Director Karen Nemsick has been a Bay Area resident since 1988.  Her long non-profit career has focused primarily on moving families out of poverty.  After working five years at Raphael House, a shelter for homeless families, Karen started her own non-profit called Women in Action to fill a gap in job preparedness training at welfare-to-work programs.  Women in Action activities taught teamwork and communication skills to women moving from welfare to work, and the activities also built confidence and challenged women to overcome self-defeating beliefs.  She also provided leadership as the Executive Director of Healing Waters, a non-profit that provides wilderness adventures to men, women and children affected by HIV and AIDS.  In addition to her direct service work, Karen has worked as a consultant to executive directors and small non-profit organizations on program development, leadership, operations, grant writing, and fundraising.  She joined Rebuilding Together San Francisco in June 2009.
