Principal's Message
Dear KMS Parents/Guardians

I would like to welcome you as a Kenston Middle School parent and to our 2017 - 2018 school year.  The middle schoolers have been settling in nicely and are very busy at school with their academics, extra curriculars, and the last days of summer.  Today our sixth graders enjoyed the Geauga Learn Program at the Geauga County Fair and learned about our county's rich history, agriculture, and raising animals.  Our seventh and eighth graders have been off to a great start in our fall sports program with soccer, volleyball, football, and cross country.

This newsletter will highlight all the wonderful things happening at KMS.  It gives you an up-to-date glance at important events, dates, and activities.  One of the biggest attended events is the Varsity Football games  on Friday nights.  In order to ensure that students attending these games are properly safe-guarded, we recommend that all middle school students be accompanied by a parent or adult when they arrive at the event and throughout the duration.  We certainly encourage enthusiastic spectators as it helps build school spirit and encourages those students who are participating in the event but we also want parents, students, and families to be able to enjoy the games.

Our KMS PTO is a strong link to the Middle School and we encourage all of our parents to join this important organization.  The PTO supports us in many different ways and we would love for you to get involved at any level.  They provide volunteers for events, support KMS financially, and fundraise to provide extra programs and assemblies.

I hope to see all of you at our fall Parent-Teacher Conferences on  September 14th from  3-7 P.M. in the gym.  Check our website ( to view live BTV announcements, photos and important information.

Forever a Bomber,

Patricia W. Brockway

Ways for Students to Get Involved at KMS!
There are a number of ways for students to get involved at KMS.  We believe that student involvement can enhance the entire educational program.

Kenston Middle School is a member of the Western Reserve Conference (WRC) and provides a well balanced, competitive athletic program for the students in grades 7-8.  Grade 6-8 students are also encouraged to join the Kenston Athletic Association programs, including those offered through Kenston Community Education (KCE).

KMS Band & Choir
All middle school bands focus on building a life-long love of music while continuing to build musical skills such as tone quality, technique, musicianship, and music reading.  These performing groups have two formal concerts each year.  Concert dates are listed in the school calendar.  Students are graded largely on participation cooperation, and their improvement.

Our goal in chorus at KMS includes providing students a positive musical experience in musical performance, improving singing techniques, and note-reading ability, and experiencing musical expression in a variety of musical genres.  Students are graded largely on participation, cooperation, progress in note-reading ability, and increasing musicianship.

Art Club is open to all KMS students who wish to explore different types of art projects in
depth.  The club is individualized to the needs of the group.  Art Club meets once a week and concentrates on one  of the arts for several sessions, so students can develop strength in an area they enjoy, beyond what they do in class. Commitment and joy in creating are the requirements.

Computer Club is a group of dedicated KMS students who learn to make and update the KMSwebsite.  This group meets after school once weekly. Interested students should see Mr. Williams.

Power of the Pen is a comprehensive program designed to strengthen the creative talents of young  writers.  We meet weekly to discuss our ideas and share our writings.  We strive to provide an open, safe environment in which our writers can experiment with their creativity and try new avenues of expression.  Power of the Pen culminates in the District, Regional, and State Competitions.  All seventh and eighth grade students are welcome to join Power of the Pen.

Student Council
is a vehicle for the student voice at Kenston Middle School.  Each year the Student Council sponsors school dances, food drives, and fundraisers with the goal of improving the environment within the school and community.  Each spring elections are held to select representatives from each grade level to serve as spokespeople for KMS.

Science Olympiad   is devoted to increasing student interest and involvement in the sciences. Tournaments are held nationwide, and are rigorous academic competitions comprised of individual and team events focusing on biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers, technology, and engineering. The team is open to students in grades 6-8.

Speech and Debate - The KMS speech and debate team competes against other middle
schools in Northeast Ohio in academic competitions once a month on Saturdays from November through March in events that focus on public speaking, debating or acting.  Middle school events include Public Forum Debate (2 vs. 2), U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking, International Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, Declamation, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, and Program Oral Interpretation.

PLEASE NOTE:  KMS's speech and debate team will hold student informational meetings on Tuesday, October 10 during lunch in Room 201  for any interested sixth, seventh, and eighth graders.  If interested, please have your child bring a bag lunch that day. The team will compete against other middle schools in Northeast Ohio on various Saturdays from the end of October through mid-March in events that focus on debating, public speaking, or acting. Additionally, all team members will participate in an intramural Debate-a-Thon during the evening of Wednesday, October 25.  Practices will begin October 17, at the high school in Room A112 (Lower A computer lab) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:45-8:45pm.   The team will initially be exposed to the world of debate and student congress.  In November, students may decide to either continue in a debate event (and continuing practicing Tuesday and Thursday evenings) or try one of the acting or other public speaking events (whose practices will instead be Wednesdays at the high school from 2:45-4:15pm beginning November 1).  Students are more than welcome to join the team later in the season.  The tournament schedule and additional information is available at: For updated middle school information via Remind, please text @b66g3h to 81010.  If you have any questions, please email Coach Steve Voudris at

It's hard to believe that we are back in school and our Fall sports teams are in full swing! The teams have been working hard to in preparation for their first competitions. The 2017-2018 school year should prove to be exciting! Good luck to all athletes, families, and coaches!

8th Football
The 8th Grade Football Team opened their season with a hard fought victory over Willoughby South by a final score of 22 to 18!  We are very proud of the boys for their determination in the face of adversity.  The team opened the season with a bye and will now take their 1-0 record to Madison next week. GO BOMBERS!!

7th Football
The 7th Grade Football team is off to a 1-1 start.  After dropping a tough game against Chardon to start the season the Bombers rebounded to defeat Willoughby 44-18.  The 25 members of the team worked hard all summer lifting and conditioning to prepare for the season.  The Bombers are doing a great job adjusting to the no huddle up tempo style that prepares them for their high school careers.  We are looking forward to continuing success throughout the season.

Boys and Girls XC
The KMS cross country teams started their season with a great showing at the Berkshire Early Bird Invitational held at Kent State University.  The boys and girls placed 5th and 8th out of 20 teams respectively.  Coach Papp and Coach Peace are integrating a variety of practice strategies to prepare the runners for yet another successful cross country season.  Kenston has taken pride in their beautiful trail system used by both athletes and community members.  The coaching staff is excited to bring the success back to Kenston by hosting this year's Western Reserve Conference Championship meet where both middle school and high school runners will tests the trails in hopes of becoming the next WRC champion!

The KMS soccer team got off to a great start with a win at home against South Euclid Lyndhurst. The score was 5-0 with a great showing by both the seventh and eighth grade girls. We are happy to announce that our home games are being played on campus in front of  Kenston High School! We are hoping to see many fans come out to support us now that are games are here. Our season runs through the first week of October so come out and cheer on your KMS soccer players!

7th Grade Volleyball
The 7th grade volleyball team is off to a fantastic start with a record of 3-0.   They are playing and working well as a team on and off the court. The team is excited and looking forward to the rest of the 2017 season.

8th Volleyball
The 8 th grade volleyball team suffered a loss in its first match of the season to Madison in three tough sets.  However the team has developed into a well-oiled machine and has won its last two matches against Willoughby and Willowick handily.

We are off to a great cheerleading season!  The cheerleaders have learned and continue to learn some great cheer routines and chants.  They will have a great experience cheering the first quarter with the Varsity cheerleaders at the Varsity game on September 8th!
PTO Host Guest Speaker, Bob Lenz
Thursday, September 7th
8:30 AM, KHS Gym
Author and international speaker, Bob Lenz, has a unique talent for connecting with young people through humility and humor.  A talented storyteller, Bob authored the book, "Grace-For Those Who Think They Don't Measure Up".  Bob speaks to nearly half a million teens and parents across North America each year through school assembly programs and outreach events to empower his listeners with a sense of dignity, self- worth, hope and faith.  He shares his own experiences and explores sober issues of bullying, self-harm, depression, suicide, alcohol, and drug abuse.  Somewhere between laughing at one of his embarrassing moments and getting choked up over one of his experiences, students will leave changed as a result.

Thanks to middle school and high school PTO, Bob will share his message to students in grades 6-12 next  Thursday, September 7th.  The middle school assembly will take place at  8:30 a.m. followed by the high school assembly beginning at  9:45 a.m.  Both assemblies will be held in the high school main gym.
