The Member Showcase winner for September was Roma Czech of
Dental Hygiene with Roma! Read on below to learn more about Roma and her business.
Here is what Roma had to say:
Tell us a little about yourself and what you do?
I am a Self-initiated Registered Dental Hygienist. This particular ability to work as one was only made available since 2007 when the government decided to remove obstacles to see a Hygienist. (ie-you had to see a dentist FIRST and then would you see a hygienist and secondly, the cost)
How and why did you get involved in your industry? Ever since I was very young I wanted to be a dentist. I had the amazing opportunity of having a very kind and interesting dentist who listened intently to whatever I said, never laughed at me and showed me that dentistry was an art.
Who is your ideal client?
Wow, so many choices here.........homebound people, people who are afraid to come, people who have turned completely off dentistry because of costs or feeling constantly upsold on dentistry, people who want to feel that they are not just another patient contributing to a lifestyle instead I want people to feel that I listen to them, give them the treatment they need ........and that my prices are fair in this economy.
What advice do you have for fellow women in business? Surround yourself with like-minded positive people, professionals who know their job and then LISTEN TO THEM! Just like when I tell people to floss...I expect them to listen! Also, learn NOT to take things personally. Business is just that...BUSINESS. Lastly, try to work out a life/work balance.
What is the hardest obstacle you have had to overcome in business? My toughest obstacle is breaking down the barriers of the old boys club! There I said it! There definitely is one! Be strong and don't give up-cry in private, smile and don't whine and make excuses all the time......it takes WORK and more work! (and some wine with friends!)
What is your favourite part of what you do? I LOVE EVERYTHING I DO! REALLY......OK wait, I don't like dealing with people who are rude.
What is your definition of success? Success for me is coming in to work happy and leaving happy and making a living. I don't have to drive a Cadillac. I have a 16 year old Focus and it still runs. (which reminds me, I need a new car.....the rust is starting to show!) What is one thing that you have done that you are proud of that most people don't know you've done? I am so proud that I have raised a son on my own! He is basically very funny, he's honest too........and he works very hard at everything he does! He's kind to me....when I went through the toughest time in my life in business he was there for me. He's a solid young man.........the other thing that I am involved in is the fact that I sit on the provincial College of Dental Hygienists Council. What does that mean? It means that I get to meet hygienists from all over Ontario and make decisions about the profession, policy governance and the future of Hygiene. Good stuff. Lucky for me I need only 5 hours of sleep a night!
