Do you have the "Right Stuff"?
by: Steve Matheny,  Executive Director

At this time of year our thoughts naturally turn to elections and the opportunity we all have to choose candidates that we believe will best represent our interests.  Similarly, here in the Chamber, you each have that same opportunity to select individuals to serve on your Board of Directors.  Currently our Board is comprised of fifteen dedicated individuals serving staggered three year terms.  Each year five Board Members' terms expire and we conduct an election to fill the seats that are vacated.  All active Chamber members in good standing are eligible to run and serve the organization as a Board member. We actively encourage our membership to consider doing so - and we are actively seeking nominees at this time.

When considering Board service you might reasonably wonder and ask yourself why should I consider adding this responsibility to my already full plate?  In response, let me suggest that there are a number of good reasons.  One major reason is that it is a great way to give back to the community and truly "Pay It Forward" in a meaningful way.  There is also a great deal of truth to the observation that you get out of an organization what you put into it.  Other very tangible benefits of Board service include the networking opportunities and the relationship building that occur organically.  The expanded network of people you meet and the connections that evolve can be very valuable to both your professional and your personal life.

As a Board member you are also regularly challenged to consider and examine what is most important to businesses (of all kinds) that are attempting to thrive in our community.  An added dimension to the challenge is that we wish to attract new businesses and help our existing businesses thrive while striving to preserve the quality of life and small town character of Granville and the surrounding community.  There are no easy answers or simple solutions to this puzzle, but our Board is committed to exploring reasonable options and potential opportunities.  This exploration itself is intriguing and thought provoking.  This Board recognizes that Granville is a special place deserving to be cherished and maintained.  There is also genuine recognition and concern that the long term viability and sustainability of what we value so much is at risk if we aren't able to measurably expand the commercial tax base in the area.

Among the Board there is a shared belief that the Chamber needs a Board of Directors with broad experience, talents, and perspectives to chart our direction forward.  We are always open to adding some new ideas, vision, and energy to the team.  Please give some thought to whether this is a good time for you to step forward and contribute to your Chamber, and your community, in this important way.  I invite you to give me a call if you have questions or would like to further discuss this opportunity.

Please let me know by September 30th if you believe that you do indeed have the "Right Stuff" and are ready to serve!  A slate of nominees will be assembled and the full Chamber membership will elect its new Board Members during the month of November.  Newly elected Board Member terms will begin as of January 1, 2018 and run through December 31, 2020.
