Opening Soon:
Vernacular Architecture
of New Mexico: Photographs by Robert Christensen

September 21, 2013 to March 16, 2014

In 52 stunning black and white photographs, Belen-based photographer Robert Christensen has documented in a spare composition format, spontaneously designed buildings such as gas stations, garages, barns, bars, sheds, and shops. The artist states, "While quite a few of these buildings still stand, as a genus they are fading away, along with the individualism and self-reliance that produced them. Some have been chicly remodeled at the expense of their original allure, and some have just vanished."

Over the past four decades, Christensen has driven to all corners of New Mexico and neighboring borderlands looking for interesting buildings along the way. Towns such as Vado, Dexter, Vaughn, Midway, Acme, La Joya, Cleveland, and Canutillo all evoke places out of forgotten legend or the mythical long ago. The range of building types serves as a compendium of American style, from the white clapboard church set against the mountains of Cloudcroft to the Spanish Mediterranean tile roofs over an arcade on an abandoned school in Contreras. This installation includes recent prints of images created from 1974 through 2013, which were donated by the artist to the Albuquerque Museum.

Our Gallery store is proud to offer "Swear", by Albuquerque Poet Laureate Hakim Bellamy. This collection of hard-hitting poems addresses the issues important to our day-politics, work, and art. Bellamy moves from a freethinking attitude of deliverance to a provocative new space where the reader can reflect on the poet's inquisition of the one percent, working-class life in urban and rural America, and the transcendent value of hip hop as one of our top exports and global contributions.
