Call for Young Kiwi Artists

If it's looking like your kid is going to be the next Picasso, you need to have their art at this year's Air New Zealand Kiwis in LA Art Show and Wine Tasting. Or even if their best work is done on your walls at home, it's time their talents were shared.

This year's show is on Saturday, October 14, 6:00pm to 10:00pm at Santa Monica Art Studios in Los Angeles, and the kids section is always a highlight. Email Keith Flamank at [email protected] if you'd like to know more or register your kid as one of this year's artists.
Welcome to Maurice Williamson
New Zealand Consul-General
in Los Angeles

We'd like to take this opportunity to welcome Maurice Williamson, who has recently taken up his post as New Zealand Consul-General in Los Angeles.

As many of you know, Maurice has served as Member of Parliament for Pakuranga, being first elected in 1987, and he has also held several ministerial posts, with his Cabinet portfolios including Customs, Statistics, Building and Construction, and Small Business. You can see a video by the Consulate introducing Maurice here

Our new Consul-General will be joined by his wife, Raewyn, in the next month or two, and you'll be able to meet Maurice at the Air New Zealand Kiwis in LA Art Show and Wine Tasting.

Welcome to Los Angeles, Maurice and Raewyn, and we wish you all the best success for your time here.
Kiwi Author in Los Angeles
Paul Feenstra's Historical Fiction

New Zealand historical fiction author, Paul Feenstra, is currently in Los Angeles promoting his novels 'Boundary' and 'The Breath of God.' As Paul says, "Americans really enjoy reading about New Zealand history - it's new, refreshing and interesting to them."

Paul's books are heavily researched and fall into the 'Faction' genre, weaving together fiction and real historical events, producing novels that both entertain and educate. 'Boundary' is centered around the colonisation of New Zealand in the late 1830's, and how the New Zealand Company obtained land, while 'The Breath of God', is about the 1864 land wars in Taranaki and the Forest Rangers who were tasked to fight rebels. His third novel, 'For Want of a Shilling' will be released later this year.

Paul's books are available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon and other good book retailers, and you can visit his website and you can see a video about 'The Breath of God' here.
Lindauer in San Francisco
Gottfried Lindauer Exhibition

The De Young Museum in Golden State Park, San Francisco, has collaborated with the Auckland Art Gallery, to feature Gottfried Lindauer's incredible Maori portraits in an exhibition that opens on Friday next week and goes through to May 6, 2018.

Thirty-one compelling historic portraits of Māori rangatira are on view in 'The Māori Portraits: Gottfried Lindauer's New Zealand.' Lindauer created the largest number of Māori portraits in existence, and these finely detailed and powerful images painted between 1874 and 1903 pay tribute to peacemakers and warriors, politicians and diplomats, tour guides and landholders, entrepreneurs and global traders.

This is a must-see exhibition if you are in San Francisco, and you can find out more details here.

Call for Young Kapa Haka
Group Performers

At this year's Air New Zealand Kiwis in LA Art Show and Wine Tasting we are lucky enough to have new Los Angeles kapa haka group Nga Anahera Maori perform. At the end of Nga Anahera Maori's performance, we'd like to invite young Kiwi and Kiwi-connected kids to join them for one awe-inspiring finale. Note that all young performers will be required to attend a rehearsal early in October to learn how to correctly perform the Maori dance and cries.
New Zealand's Newest Famous Kiwi
Pete

Air New Zealand want you to meet Pete, the star of their new global marketing campaign. Pete is a typically cheeky Kiwi with a voice that sounds suspiciously like that of Sam Neill. Introduced to the world recently in Los Angeles, Pete shows you there's a better way to fly - with Air New Zealand.

Check out the new campaign and get to know Peter - New Zealand's new star that's going places.
A Fast-Paced Film
McLaren

'McLaren' is a documentary that tells the story of Bruce McLaren, the New Zealander who founded the McLaren Motor Racing team, and a man who showed the world that someone of humble beginnings could take on the elite of motor racing and win.

'McLaren' follows the story of Bruce from his early days in Auckland to his teams unprecedented successes in Formula 1 in Europe and Can-Am in the States, and his tragic and untimely death in 1970 at the age of 32. Directed by renowned Kiwi filmmaker Roger Donaldson, who also directed 'The World's Fastest Indian' amongst other box office hits, 'McLaren' is a compelling film about a Kiwi hero, made more impactful by interviews with the people who knew him best.

Following a 25 city screening tour which was completely sold-out, 'McLaren' is now available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon, and on demand on your cable provider. Visit the film's website to learn more.
Organization Update
Kiwis in LA

At the beginning of 2016 Kiwis in LA outlined a plan to formalize the structure of Kiwis in LA in order to ensure the organization would thrive over the years to come. The three key elements in the plan included:
  • Establishing Kiwis in LA as a proper legal and financial entity
  • Applying for tax-exempt status
  • Developing a new website which could become a focal point
We're pleased to announce that all these initiatives are almost complete.

Last year Kiwis in LA was formalized as an unincorporated association, registered in the State of California. The organization now has its own bank accounts, Articles of Association and By-Laws. The Articles of Assocation and By-laws can be viewed and downloaded on our website.

Kiwis in LA now has a Board of Directors covering as much as possible of the region where our members reside. The board currently consists of the following people, and you can learn more about them on our website:
  • Keith Flamank           President
  • Vicki Tyler                Vice-President
  • Roger Pearce            Treasurer and Secretary
  • Patrick Veysey           Director (Los Angeles)
  • Hillary Brick              Director (Long Beach)
  • Neville Kenning         Director (Orange County)
Kiwis in LA has also advised the relevant authorities of our intent to operate as a 501(c)4 organization, which will establish Kiwis in LA as a tax-exempt organization, although under this status donations and memberships will not be tax-deductible. We are currently awaiting IRS determination of our status.

The new Kiwis in LA website is also now live. At the moment there is still a great deal of content to add, but the basics are in place. You can now pay your annual membership online and submit your bio and submit your business for inclusion on the website. We've also made it the go-to place to find out info about all our upcoming events, including pub nights, the Air New Zealand Kiwis in LA Art Show and Wine Tasting, and the Kiwis in LA Christmas Party.

As part of the new website, we also developed a new logo for Kiwis in LA, which you can see at left.

We do our best to provide the New Zealand community and "friends of New Zealand' with great events and news, and we appreciate all your help and support, especially as volunteers and attendees at our events.
