VISITOR COMMENTS
Stunning!!
Wonderful!!!
Thank you for sharing your family legacy.

Sybil Rampen, whose family arrived in Oakville in 1912,  has created an extraordinary collection of paintings and art from her family that extends over 200 years and 7 generations.

Included in the collection is the art of Anthony Salvin, b.1799, an architect and painter who is known for restoration work in Windsor Castle, Durham Cathedral and the Tower of London.

Also on display works of Amice Calverley, an Egyptologist. Through the funding of John D. Rockefeller Jr. who"was deeply inspired by the beauty of the painted reliefs of Seti I, Abydos and the excellence in producing them"  had a desire to see as many plates as possible produced. The lavish production that evolved from her artistic efforts was a joint Egypt Exploration Society and Oriental Institute project.

The family art has survived wars and depletion. It has voyaged from countless countries to find its way home to Oakville and the Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre.

Continuing in modern day and the most recent generation of artists in the Calverley - Rampen legacy will be the inclusion of  the art of Dick Rampen, Professor at OCAD.

...And so much more...

Mark your calendars for more than visit to view this exhibition. You will feast on the stories and history that Sybil will share as she takes takes you through time with her incredibly talented family. Turn off the History channel and tune in and turn into JCHAC for this event.

 JOSEF PETRISKA

ARTIST, SCULPTOR, NATURE'S VOICE

September 13 - October 13

Opening Tea Party - Meet the Artist

September 15

 2:00 - 5:00

Struggle for Survival

Josef Petriska

"In keeping with JCHAC's vision, (to support community art by exhibiting local artists), JCHAC is pleased to launch Josef Petriska, Artist, Sculptor and Nature's Voice", says Sybil Rampen. "This exhibition is an opportunity for the community to renew their love and appreciation for such an extraordinary man".

Josef Petriska, a great artist and sculptor, is a national treasure; an octogenarian living at Palermo (a community in Oakville, Ontario) surrounded by his life's work. He is an environmentalist. One of his most notable works is "Struggle for Survival", a bronze sculpture of a bird, dying from an oil  spill. This powerful symbol, endorsed by the World Wildlife Fund, has been featured on the CBC program The Nature of Things with David Suzuki.

To local residents a familiar Oakville landmark is the towering Oak Leaf art installation in Oakville Place. Perhaps not so well known is the sculptor responsible for the piece is Josef Petriska.

Josef has exhibited alongside  Karel Appel, Harold Town,

Andrew Wyeth, Etrog Sorel, Robert Bateman, and members of the Group of Seven.

The time has arrived to disperse his collection and share it with

the world. This is your opportunity to own a Josef Petriska sculpture, painting, print or relief. Selected pieces will be for sale during the exhibition. Given the interest in Josef's work make plans to visit the exhibition early and often to experience his visions through art and perchance own an original piece of Josef Petriska art.

Proceeds of sales will be shared with the new Oakville Hospital.

WHAT'S NEW AT JCHAC

JOSHUA CREEK GAZEBO

It was a sensational August summer day, the skies were clear, the weather perfection as the new Gazebo welcomed its first ceremonial tying of the marriage knot. Eighty seated guests facing the Gazebo and the meadow beyond witnessed the bare foot bride's maids and maid of honor lead the way for the bride and her escort. Waiting in the Gazebo, the groom, best man, groomsmen and the Officiant. The soft lyrics of the sole musician singing "Do you Want to Hold My Hand" enveloped the space. It was picture perfect. The wedding party moved on to enjoy the Gallery space for the reception and dancing. The brilliance of the moon lit the patio for those wanting to relish the remaining summer nights outdoors.whatsnew

JCHAC LEGACY

With Sybil's assistance each month we would like to add factoids of Joshua Creek so that we all may have a deeper understanding of it's heritage and evolution into the oasis we enjoy today. "Our intent is to honor the pioneers who once lived here. JCHAC is an oasis, breathing space as the urbanization of  Oakville accelerates."

It is thought the Mississauga Indians wintered in this valley near a spring that never froze. The first settlers arrived in 1810. The Bowbeer family but the barn with hand hewn beams that is now the Gallery. William Somerset Bower, his wife Mercy Fish raised a large family here. He was a Reeve of Trafalgar Township. They grew wheat on the cleared land and were able to add a Palladian Georgian addition, the kitchen in 1853.

YOU ASKED;

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MAZE AND A LABYRINTH

Meaning: Labyrinth - has a single through-route with twists and turns but without branches.

Maze - a confusing pathway that has many pathways, choices and dead ends.

Level of Difficulty: Labyrinth - not designed to be difficult. It may be long but only one path (unicursal).

Maze - a tour puzzle that can be designed with varying levels of difficulty and complexity.

Entry and Exit: Labyrinth - has only one entry point that is also the exit. There is only one path to the center.

Maze - may have multiple entry and exit points.

Significance: Labyrinth - can have a spiritual significance, meditative.

Maze - used for and in science to measure spatial awareness and sometimes intelligence.

FUTURE GALLERY EXHIBITIONS

We are presently taking proposals for future exhibitions in the Art Gallery. JCHAC Gallery is the home to ten shows each year with each exhibition running for one month. The focus of the Gallery is to be a venue for emerging artists. Should a showing by a single artist seem daunting consider an exhibition of a collective of three or four artists. We look forward to hearing from you and discussing opportunities. Please contact Bill Hewitt for more information.
