TALK ~ READ ~ SING
National Literacy Month

September is National Literacy Month! Reading helps children develop four basic thinking skills, including the ability to pay attention, a good memory, the ability to solve problems, and good language skills.

First 5 Amador further promotes this through their "Talk, Read, Sing" Campaign. Each year, one third of America's children arrive at their first day of school developmentally behind their peers and without the skills necessary to succeed at their grade level, according to Jumpstart, a nationwide leader in promoting early literacy. When children begin behind their peers, catching up, especially without additional assistance, is difficult and unlikely.

It's easy to make reading with your child an every day event. Click here for fun ways to get started!

In addition, First 5 Amador has partnered with Dolly Parton and the Imagination Library! This free program provided over 5,700 to over 750 Amador County children in the past year. All Amador County children are eligible from birth until their fifth birthday. After signing up, each child will receive one free book in the mail each month. That means that if a child is signed up at birth, they will receive 60 books - for free! For more information and to sign up today click here.

Reading Together!

It's easy and fun to encourage reading from day one!
  • Pick a comfortable spot to read in - one with plenty of light.
  • Make it a routine - whether it's right before the breakfast, or right before bed, set aside a special time every day.
  • Give lots of encouragement! Read the words aloud to your child. Point to the pictures. Say the words together. Laugh with your child.
  • It's never too early. Reading can be a bonding activity for you and your new baby. Introduce reading in the very beginning, keep books in the nursery and have your books out for baby and toddler to see!
  • The fun continues after the last page! When you finish a story, ask your child about his/her favorite passages, characters, and illustrations.
Little Free Libraries
Take a book, leave a book!

What is a Little Free Library?

Little Free Libraries offer a way to share good things to read: books that intrigue, books that teach, books that are fun! Whose libraries are these? They belong to everybody: neighbors, friends, people we don't even know yet. Anyone can use them. That's why we want to take care of them. Take a book:
if you see a book you would like to read, take it. Share a book: after you read the book, return it to any Little Free Library, or bring books from home that you would like to share with others.

We have 16 Little Free Libraries in Amador County!
