Seasonal Information for September

Vegetables and Herbs  -  Yes, the calendar says Fall even though it still feels like summer!  It is now time for fall-gardening ! Plant warm-season crops - green beans, squash, cucumbers early this month.  Cool season crops also start to go in this month.  Some shade over the rows can protect them from the heat this month as well as keeping the soil moist and applying mulch to the bare soil.
( leave seeded rows open for sunlight)

Lawns -   Make a fall application of an organic fertilizer in late September.  If your lawn is not dense and sunlight can reach the soil surface, weeds are likely to become a problem.
Cool season weeds start to sprout in late September.  We recommend using Corn Gluten for an organic pre-emergent.
The best way to have a reasonably weed-free lawn is to build a dense turf with proper mowing, watering, fertilizing and adequate sunlight.  If you don't, you'll be on a chemical treadmill year after year, fighting weeds.

Grace Designs Jewelry
by Emily Grace Bowers

Emily Grace Bowers discovered her gift for making jewelry while working on a fun project with friends, and jewelry design quickly blossomed into a passion. She enjoyed creating beautiful jewelry so much that she began taking jewelry classes. She continues to attend workshops and intensive classes to advance her skills. She has studied jewelry design under Tom Lorio at LSU, silversmithing under Don Norris and wire-wrapping under Gene Sheridan at William Holland School of Lapidary Arts.
Emily's work is continually evolving, and she is currently working primarily with silver and gold, which she wraps into earrings, pendants and bracelets. Beautiful semi-precious stones, pearls, Swarovski crystals and vintage buttons are some of the objects incorporated into her designs. She also enjoys the search for beautiful and unique stones and gems from all over the world to wrap into pendants and earrings.
Emily also continues to work with copper and brass, which she embosses and colors with various techniques.   She has recently added a line of earrings crafted from vintage components.

Walla Walla County in Washington state might just be the only place on Earth where you have to brake for bees.
"You can see the signs here," says Mike Ingham, as he drives by a 20 mph speed limit sign with a smaller one below stating "Alkali Bee Area."
"There's actually a county ordinance to slow the cars down who go by here, because a speeding car can kill a lot of alkali bees," Ingham says.
