It seems impossible that summer could already be over, but we at 826CHI are too excited to wallow in sadness. The official beginning of fall means we are kicking off another year of creative, energetic writing programs--in our new home!

But first! Join us at The Hideout this Saturday for some fun(draising) >>
Tale-Gate, a street festival of literary proportions, is coming to The Hideout THIS Saturday, September 27th!

Live music, live lit, improv interpretations of student writing, classic tailgate lawn games, German street food, drinks from The Hideout...all to benefit the programs of 826CHI. $10 at the door, 21+. See you there!

826CHI FORWARD UPDATE

As you read this, the City of Chicago might be inspecting the electrical wiring in our new space. Or, contractors may be installing our drop ceiling and acoustical tiling. We recently walked in on what can only be described as a drywall fiesta. It's all happening!

A special thanks to our future landlord, Lee Stansbury, for covering the majority of these basic build-out costs and helping us stay on track,

And to Helios Design Build for supporting the affordable construction of all bookshelves and surfaces, designed by Gensler, throughout our new home. We're talking MORSE CODE BOOKSHELVES, y'all!

Thanks to all who continue to support this project, and to everyone who has been incredibly patient during our two months of transition.

We can't wait to see you in October!

THE COMPENDIUM VOL IV: A THANKFEST IN FIVE PARTS

Last Friday, we celebrated the release of The 826CHI Compendium Volume IV, an anthology of student writing from across all areas of 826CHI programming.

This project represents literally thousands of hours of work on behalf of our students, volunteers, and interns--to whom we say, Thank you. Another gigantic thank-you goes to our partners; DePaul University's service-learning students and their community press, Big Shoulders Books.

We're also so grateful to Alison Kuczwara of Tiny Bold Creative for designing the cover and layout and to artist Marnie Galloway for beautifully illustrating the book's maps and pictures. Another massive high-five/hug combo goes out to Tara Jayakar, our yearlong Publishing intern--without whom this project would have been completely impossible (and not nearly as much fun).

And, finally, THANK YOU to the full theater of guests, who dedicated a Friday evening to the amazing work of our students!

We're happy you agree: our student authors are endlessly inspiring.
ZOOM IN: 826CHI'S YOUNG AUTHORS' BOOK PROJECT

An In-School partnership with 10th graders from Curie Metropolitan High School will yield this year's 826CHI Young Authors' Book Project, to be released at Printers Row Lit Fest in June 2015.

Students will work with volunteers to write about significant places in their lives, drawing on creative nonfiction and personal storytelling to shape narratives unique to their lives and perspectives

This yearlong program will also provide a space for students to critique how stories are told in the media, sharpening their news literacy skills while crafting original stories.

We want to know: What are your favorite Chicago places? What are news headlines saying to--and about--you? Write alongside our students with weekly writing prompts; just follow @826CHI on Twitter and keep an eye on the  #YABP hashtag as this project develops.
CHICAGO WRITERS CONFERENCE

826CHI is thrilled to partner with Chicago Writers Conference, a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting adult Chicago writers through conferences, workshops, and other literary events. This year, generously provided 10 826CHI volunteers with conference scholarships!

Registration for their October 24-26 conference is now open to the public. Session topics include "What Publishers and Agents Want" and "Writing In The Sheets: A Sex-Writing Intensive with Patricia Ann McNair," to name just two. Full lineup >>
