From the Library Administrator
Library Director Susan McNeil-Marshall met with pivotal members of the library renovation team on August 28 to complete a building walk-through prior to the start of construction. Pictured left to right: construction management firm  FQC  representatives Aaron Metzler and John Ellanardo, Director McNeil-Marshall, and, architects Dan Pohrte and Alex Krug, both of Product Architecture + Design .

Construction has now begun in the Children's and Adult/Teen Departments as part of the renovation that will result in a more modern and useful building for the Woodridge community. While the library remains open during construction, patrons will find it quieter in the late afternoon and evening. Details, photos and a video of a large non-fiction bookcase being swiftly moved can be found at  woodridgelibrary.org/renovation.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month and we'd like to connect with community members who are not making use of all that the library has to offer. If you have a neighbor or family member that is not a current cardholder encourage him or her to stop by or give us a call. All of our services remain free of charge for residents, including at-home access to otherwise costly subscription databases and magazines. We also have plenty of books for all ages and interests.

October marks the 15th annual Woodridge Art Show, a unique opportunity for local artists to showcase their work. Residents 18 and older are welcome to participate. Guidelines for participation in the show and a registration form are now available online or at the Circulation desk. Registration forms are due September 25.

We are partnering with the West Suburban Community Pantry in its mission to alleviate hunger close to home. A food collection bin for the Pantry's Fill the Bus fundraiser will be available in the library's lobby throughout September.

One of our regular library patrons shared with us her delight in discovering  "good reads"  in the non-fiction collection during a recent visit.  Due to the renovation, non-fiction bookshelves are now in the path she normally takes to get to the fictional novels she typically enjoys.  I hope you find an unexpected library treasure on your next visit. Your patience during this exciting, if somewhat disruptive, time is appreciated.

Art Gallery Showing
September's Featured Artists: Nancy Wu and Susan A. Bartlett
Nancy Wu
Susan A. Bartlett
Nancy Wu and Susan A. Bartlett are local artists who have both attended illustration classes at the Morton Arboretum. While both artists find inspiration in nature, each artist's work reflects her differing intent and focus.

Susan "love(s) to play with transparency of light and the drama of shadows." Nancy seeks to "encourage views to slow down your steps, close your eyes and listen."

The Woodridge Library Gallery will feature the mixed media botanical inspired work of Wu and Bartlett throughout September. The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception in the library lobby on Saturday, September 12 from 2 - 4 p.m.
Around the Library
Caution tape blocked access to the 2nd floor study rooms on August 31.
Musician Steve Justman shared original pieces of Pete Seeger memorabilia during his musical tribute on August 16.

The Children's staff gathered in their work room on August 28 as they made final preparations for the start of the library renovation. One result of the construction project will be an open and inviting Children's Library on the  second floor.
