My Trip to Sustainable Aquatics
We just got back from our annual trip to the Sustainable Aquatics hatchery in Jefferson City TN. The facility looked fantastic and we got first peek at a couple of exciting new clownfish varieties that have yet to be released! Every single fish was hand picked and I put my favorite varieties on sale this week!! Check out this video!
Sustainable Aquatics focus is on superior care for their fish to achieve the best health and highest quality and survival to the hobbyist aquarium. SA has bred dozens of fish species, nudibranches, Peppermint Shrimp, and is currently working to be the first to produce captive bred tangs!

Serious Clowns by Sustainable Aquatics

  1. BLAZE Orange Ocellaris: SA has done it again and made the most popular clownfish species in the marine aquarium hobby even better! These "knock-your-eyes-out" orange beauties are produced by a smaller than normal adult pair which also produced the mysterious Color Changing Clowns. This suggests the brilliant orange color is the result of a genetic mutation. This fish is characterized by blaze orange coloration, a straight center bar where the white stripes are outlined by dark black edges. This is the most exciting wild type clownfish development in years! Supply is limited since these fish are all produced by a single pair of fish. The SA Blaze Orange Clownfish maxes out at 3.5 inches and requires at least a 10 gallon tank and does not require an anemone to thrive. This is a peaceful easy care level reef-safe fish. $40 SAVE 10% $36!! (10 in-stock).
  2. Ultra Black Snowflake with BULLETHOLES: This designer clown is a newer strain A. ocellaris first developed by ORA.  It was created by crossing Black Ice Snowflakes with wild Black Ocellaris over multiple generations. The result was a spectacular new variety of Black Ocellaris that has unique patterning in each fish. The original orange Snowflake Clown was created from a normal looking Ocellaris pair by Tropical Marine Center in the UK in 1999. They would produce 2 or 3 Snowflakes every couple of spawns. Ultra Black Snowflakes are characterized by a black body with irregular white patterns with bulletholes, sometimes with an orange nose. The SA Ultra Black Snowflake maxes out at 3.5 inches and requires at least a 10 gallon and does not require an anemone to thrive. This is a peaceful easy care level reef-safe fish. $150 SAVE 50% $75!! (6 in-stock).
  3. CAKE Clowns: The saying "have your cake and eat it too" is defined as to "do two good things simultaneously that are usually impossible to do at the same time". The SA Cake Clownfish is the best of both worlds, adults exhibit both color characteristics of an Orange Ocellaris and a Black Darwin Ocellaris! Adults develop jet black coloration on the dorsal side (top half) of the body and a deep red-orange coloration on the ventral side (bottom half). The SA Cake Clownfish maxes out at 3.5 inches and requires at least a 10 gallon tank and does not require an anemone to thrive. This is a peaceful easy care level reef-safe fish. $28 SAVE 25% $21!! (10 in-stock).
  4. Vivid SNOWFLAKE: This designer clown was created from a normal looking Ocellaris pair by Tropical Marine Center in the UK in 1999. They would produce 2 or 3 Snowflakes every couple of spawns. They are characterized by the irregular white patterns having a more "smooth" appearance sometimes with spots, outlined by thin black edges and a bright orange body color.  Most of them also develop a blue hued border on the inside edges of the white as they mature. Like snowflakes no two are the same. The Vivid Snowflake maxes out at 3.5 inches and requires at least a 10 gallon and does not require an anemone to thrive. This is a peaceful easy care level reef-safe fish. $45 SAVE 25% $33.75!! (6 in-stock).

Spots and Stripes!

  1. Sailfin Shark:   These cool sharks get their name from their large dorsal fin. They are very undemanding like many of their relatives and do best when kept with large peaceful community fish. They grow to roughly 10 inches and need at least a 75 gallon tank where a group should be housed. They require a pH between 6-8 in order to thrive and mid to warm temperatures. Provide them with a varied diet to ensure their best health.  Regularly $20  S&S at $15!  (3 in stock).
  2. South American Puffers: True freshwater puffers can be hard to come by, and we are always on the lookout for exciting new puffers to bring you.  The Amazon Puffer is native to the streams in the Amazon basin, but may also be occasionally found in the river itself.  This active puffer grows up to 5 inches and length and will require at least a 55 gallon tank at maturity.  Since they are a shoaling fish, it is important to keep them in groups of at least three.  As with all puffers, their diet should include snails to help wear down their continuously growing beak.   Regularly $20  S&S at $15!   (6  in stock).
  3. Rubbernose Pleco: Reaching a manageable five inches in length, this plecostomus is a good alternative to the common plecostomus. They are also called Bulldog plecos for their uniquely shaped snouts. They are excellent algae eaters, but will happily accept meaty foods as well. Since they are such good algae eaters, it may be necessary to provide algae wafers if they consume the majority of the algae in the tank. These easy to keep plecos are undemanding of a specific water quality and can adjust to varying pH levels.  They are best kept one to a tank as they may show some aggression towards conspecificsRegularly $12 S&S at $8! (6 in stock).

  4. Tiger Barb: Tiger barbs have been a very popular fish in the hobby for years with many color variations becoming available. This fish can be aggressive if kept alone or in a small group. To reduce aggression with tankmates, be sure to keep these fish in schools of at least six and keep them only with faster moving fish with no long fins.  They are not particularly sensitive to water conditions, but a neutral pH and regular water changes are recommended. Regularly $4 S&S at $2! (24 in stock).

Lots of Plants!
  1. Assorted Potted Swords: Swords are a very popular aquarium plant due to their large size and unique leave patterns. Sword plants do best when kept in slightly acidic and warm waters full of aquatic plant fertilizers. The most important fertilizer for swords is iron. If your sword's leaves start to turn yellow and die it means that it needs more iron supplementation. Sword plants do need medium to high light and will thrive with CO2 injection though it is not required to keeping them.   Regularly $8 PLANT at  $6!  (12 in stock).
  2. Red Tiger Lotus: These are by far one of the most beautiful aquatic plants. The red tiger lotus is a bulb plant that grows large red/purple, arrow-shaped leaves that change color depending on the light. This plant will flower with a dark pink, night-blooming flower when allowed to grow to the surface. When compact growth is desired, cut back longer stems to encourage the plant to stay shorter. Keep this plant in medium to high light in order for it to thrive. Regularly $7 PLANT at $5! (6 in stock).
  3. Scarlet Temple: This stunning high light plant has deep red on the underside of its leaves, making it a dramatic addition to any aquascape. When kept in high light tanks with CO2 and fertilizers, the tops of the leaves will begin to turn red as well. This is a stem plant and can be propagated through cuttings. It does best in pH between 6.5-7.5 and temperatures between 74-78?F. Regularly $6 PLANT at $3! (12 in stock).
  4. Banana Plant: The banana shaped roots of this plant give it its name and make it a popular and unique aquarium plant. The roots stay partially above the substrate and store nutrients for the rest of the plant.  When planting, make sure that no more than ? of the length of the roots is under the substrate. While generally a tolerant plant, they do need moderate light levels. In lower light, the stems will be shorter, while in higher lighting, the stems will grow longer and the leaves will quickly reach the water's surface. Regularly $5 PLANT at $3! (12 in stock).
