UTAH AMERICORPS MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Our Utah AmeriCorps Member of the Month is  Taylor Kevern!
Taylor is currently in the first year of BYU's Family, Home, and Social Sciences Master of Social Work program. He is completing his AmeriCorps term of service at Primary Children's Hospital's Residential Treatment Center. Taylor has been serving at the hospital since the end of April where he has been involved with individual and family therapy. He is taking an online class to enhance his knowledge and expertise in working with children with trauma.

Taylor also mobilized a group of volunteers to prevent extensive possible flood damage in a family home. These efforts were planned in an effort to protect the home from further damage that could come due to storms. This family did not have the funds to provide the materials or the labor necessary to complete the project. The project included cleaning, digging trenches, laying foundation work, and installing structural walls. This was an exceptional reflection of the AmeriCorps pledge in that it strengthened the community through service to fellow citizens. This project was completed in one Saturday and proved to be an enormous blessing for this family in need.

AmeriCorps, also known as the Domestic Peace Corps, engages thousands of Americans nationwide in intensive, results-driven service in areas of education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve for up to a year and receive a modest living allowance, training,  and an education scholarship to pay for college or pay back student loans.
