AROUND SHABAZZ
Shabazz Student Attends Youth Apprenticeship Day
Shout out to Dana Nelson (first row, second from right) for representing Shabazz on Thursday, March 8 at the Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship Day at the Wisconsin Capitol.

During this day, students shared their Youth Apprenticeship (YA) story with state Representatives and Senators, and discuss ways that YA have helped prepare them for their future endeavors. Great job, Dana!
Yearbook Progress!
The 2017-18 Shabazz yearbook is one step closer to completion. Here yearbook students make final adjustments to the layout. Congratulations! We can't wait to see it.

Students who started at Shabazz first quarter this school year (2017-2018) had an opportunity to purchase a yearbook with other fees. Students who started at Shabazz  after  first quarter did not have an opportunity to purchase a yearbook with other school fees. However, any student can purchase a yearbook from now until May 1 simply by submitting $20.00 to Hannah in the Shabazz office. Students must submit payment to receive a yearbook. Yearbooks will be distributed in the last days of the final quarter.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Attention: New Shabazz Families
All parents, guardians, and significant adults in our students' lives are invited to come to our monthly Parent Meetings . These meetings are a great way to visit with principal Aric Soderbloom, network with other Shabazz families, support one another and get involved with our unique school. Meetings are the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the Shabazz library. Meetings are informal, but informational.  Next meeting will be Wednesday, April 11 at 6:30 in the LMC.
Students: Thinking About Summer Employment?
Students, if you are thinking about summer employment or educational opportunities you are in luck. Training, employment and volunteer opportunities for students are available at the Training, Employment, & Volunteer Opportunities website.  See Sarah Drake if you have any questions! Or email her at [email protected]
UPCOMING EVENTS
Oliver/Lang Day - A Shabazz Tradition
Oliver/Lang Day is a celebration in honor of two influential Shabazz community members who brought joy to themselves and others through food and music.

Dennis Oliver taught French at East High and had agreed to expand to Shabazz to teach students interested in learning the language. Kurt Lang was a Shabazz student who had a passion for all things French.  The rest is history which you can read here .

This year's Oliver/Lang Day will be on Thursday, April 26. Students will enjoy a Community Lunch, a ukulele workshop presented by Madison Area Ukulele Initiative (MAUI), and a performance by the band DISQ featuring Shabazz alums Isaac De Broux-Slone and Raina Bock.
Keep Shabazz Alive with Music - Give to the Oliver/Lang Fund
The Oliver/Lang Fund is dedicated to keeping Shabazz alive with music by purchasing violins, music equipment, and bringing in local musicians, and also celebrating with food through community lunches and other school events.

Our current wish list includes a new stage for performances while continuing to bring music, food, and community to Malcolm Shabazz City High School. You can donate to the Oliver/Lang Fund by either writing a check to Shabazz with Oliver/Lang Fund in the memo, or by contributing online through the  Shabazz High Capital Fund
