Rabbi Efrem Goldberg

Friends,

As you know, we are only a few days away from Shabbos Ha'Gadol, a time that our community comes together to study and grow.  This year, we will be studying a topic I found truly fascinating while preparing.   Many aren't aware that in no less than three places, the Torah warns us not to go back to Egypt.  Indeed, the Rambam quotes this prohibition as practical Jewish law.  This is particularly interesting given that the Rambam himself lived in Egypt.  In the course of our study we will address such questions as:

  • Why was it ok for the Rambam, Arizal, Radvaz and Rav Ovadia Yosef to live in Egypt if in fact it is prohibited?
  • Did the Rambam convert to Islam only to return to Judaism after fleeing oppression?
  • Is it wrong to live in Germany today?
  • What is the purpose of Seder night?
  • Can there be a Judaism without God?
  • How should we talk to our children about God?
  • What does it mean to give nachas to Hashem?

I would be honored if you join me at 6:40pm this Shabbos afternoon to study these questions and more.  Mincha will take place at 6:15pm with a dessert reception beforehand at 5:45pm.  I hope you will make it your business to be a part of a community seeking to learn and grow together.
