Sharing the Good News
From Doug's Desk
doug thrasher
Dear Friends,

I wonder if you are aware of the Mission efforts our District has agreed to participate in together? Let me tell you about them. Our District Leadership decided that we would support three District wide Mission efforts this year. The first was to raise money for "Imagine No Malaria." We encouraged every church to participate in this offering, and most have. To date, our District has raised over $145,000 dollars. Your generosity has been amazing! If your church has not yet participated in this offering, you still can and I would encourage you to do so before the end of the year.

Our second Mission effort was to encourage churches to participate in some sort of summer lunch program for children in their communities who would go hungry without lunch provided. While I do not know the exact number of churches that participated in this, at our District Set Up Meeting last night I asked the Pastors to raise their hands if their churches had, and I'm sure I saw at least two dozen hands go up.

Our third Mission effort is to encourage churches to participate in "Stop Hunger Now." This weekend Dunwoody and John's Creek will be host events to build the meals to be sent to those outside our country who are desperately hungry. The Dunwoody event starts at 8 AM and the John's Creek event begins at 9 AM. If you or your church would like to participate, you can go to the Dunwoody or John's Creek church web sites and sign up for a time slot. I hope that, over time, we will develop this so that many of our churches become involved in helping to combat hunger around the world.

In addition, I must mention that a number of our churches participated in helping build a Habitat for Humanity house this year. In the Spring, members from Chamblee, Creekside, John's Creek, Lanier, Macedonia, Midway, Northbrook, Roswell, Simpsonwood, St. James Alpharetta, Winter's Chapel, and Dunwoody worked to build a house that was finished early in the Summer.

I want to thank everyone for making a difference through serving Christ and the world. The song I learned at Glisson as a youth is still true, "And they'll know we are Christians by our love..."

I love you all,

Doug

Wouldn't it be great to have an all-day workshop where top worship musicians and leaders can help your youth worship team become more effective in their ministry?

On August 15th (a Saturday) the Conference is offering a workshop for your youth ministry worship team (that's a band of musicians, a tech crew, worship planners, directors - whomever you have involved in leading youth worship) to gain great insight and instruction around their calling to help lead worship.

The workshop is from 8:30 to 3:30 on Saturday, August 15th, at Roswell UMC. It will be led by Chuck Bell with breakout times (led by knowledgeable leaders in the areas) for guitars, vocalists, keyboardists, drums, tech/video, and youth leaders. Breakout sessions are hands on experiences that allow the participant to get real time instruction and encouragement while utilizing their own instrument. Both breakout sessions will also include instruction on the songs utilized in the opening and closing worship services.

Cost for the one day training is $40 per person or a maximum of $200 per church. You can find out more and register ahead at https://northga-reg.brtapp.com/YouthWorshipBandWorkshop

DivorceCare at Dunwoody UMC
divorce care

DivorceCare is a friendly, caring group of people with whom you will learn about and discuss important information on relevant topics (depression, loneliness, faith, single sexuality, finances, anger and others) through one of life's most difficult experiences. Don't go through separation or divorce alone. Or tell a friend who may need this support

DivorceCare for Kids (DC4K) is a comprehensive 14 -week program that helps children through the grieving process brought on by divorce. It provides children with a safe and neutral place to recognize and learn how to share their feelings, and gives them the tools necessary to develop healthier relationships within their own families. If you know someone going through a divorce, make sure he or she knows about these groups; it might just be the best thing you could do to help.

These 2 classes, which run concurrently,  begin September 9 and continue through December 16. Although we skip Thanksgiving week, before the holiday season we will do a special adult component, SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS. All classes meet from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Adults - Parlor; Kids - Room 140. For more information contact Cathy Wright at [email protected]. Nursery is available at no cost for children younger than 5, but you must register.
