"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him."   1 john 3:1

February 2017
A word from Walker,

Winter brings with it a pregnant pause in our lifestyles. We slow down, pull back and retreat a bit as the temperature drops. Flowers, trees, and even animals go into a dormant or rest phase as they await Spring. It seems as if Winter reminds us that there are occasions when it is wise to back off a little and restore our energy.

But this is not always an easy truth to accept in congregational life. Churches often experience downtrends in giving and attendance during the heart of the Winter months. It is easy to worry a bit. Some make the mistake of trying to counter this slow-down by scheduling more activities. In my experience this typically ends with church leaders being frustrated by low turnouts. Perhaps what is required instead is adding another tool to our discipleship toolbox.

I think this tool could represent having members spend more time in focused reflection and preparation. Making provisions in our budgets and calendars for retreats, prayer guides and new family devotional materials all are examples of this strategic shift. In addition, having people assemble in small groups and enjoy the hearty meal of a warm bowl of soup as part of the rhythm of fellowship reinforces this purposeful season of rest and renewal. Activities like these (but not limited to them) mirror the season of Winter rather than fighting against it.

This is not to say that the church should cease activities and close down shop until the first jonquils bloom. We still need to assemble together to worship the living God. My suggestion would be to simplify your approach during Winter. For example, you could spread out special programs so that your members don't feel the pressure to constantly battle the elements anytime they come together. Teach on subjects that relate to the more reflective aspects of our journey with God. Put more efforts into your Social Media outreach strategy. I have recently seen how some pastors used Facebook Live to broadcast a Bible study when services are canceled due to harsh weather. Implementing ideas like this shows our members that we still want them to be active in their daily walk with Christ, while showing an appropriate kind of adaptability regarding people's schedules and circumstances.

Regardless of what you do, be sure to be intentional in your ministry approach during the Winter months. If you do so, you will be glad that you took the time and effort to think through the challenges and opportunities associated with this season.

Your fellow-laborer in Christ,

Walker Armstrong
Interim Director of Missions
