A Personal Note from Susan

I'm about to put myself out there in a bigger way than I am naturally comfortable doing.
Here is a video montage of my keynote presentation, " Six Lessons in Becoming a More Effective Negotiator from earlier this month.  I spoke before
more than 100 business owners at the annual "Celebrating Women in Business" event held in Owego, NY.

Why am I sharing this video?

It's not because I think it is so wildly amazing that the world needs to see it.  It is because I have been sharing with you  the importance that SPEAKING plays in growing your successful business .  Regardless of your industry, whether you are B2B, or consumer focused,  SPEAKING is a powerful way to share your message, grow your list, and make sales.

So,  I am practicing what I preach!   Those of you that know me well know that  public speaking is not my favorite thing to do.   I've come a long way in the last four years since opening by new business,  Tap Into Your Center ,
thanks to amazing mentors, proper preparation and practice, along with a whole lot of EFT a/k/a Tapping.

In particular,  I've used a tapping sequence that I wrote and recorded called "Let Your Light Shine" and it has helped me to step out onto a stage , share my wisdom and message with hundreds of people.  In today's
Resource Section of this Co-Creator's Corner, I've shared with you a link so that you can download it and give it a shot.  I hope it provides you with the support you need to Let Your Own Light Shine!

I also decided to  share a synopsis of my presentation in the main article below.  I hope that you  find a golden nugget or two that you can implement in your next negotiation .

Six Lessons in Becoming a More Effective Negotiator

Lesson One:   It's NOT about YOU!
Our life experiences,  our perceptions, influence our ability to successfully negotiate .  You need to separate the people from the problem.  When you accept that you are coming into the negotiations with certain perceptions, assumptions and feelings,  based on your own unique life experiences , along with the knowledge that so is the person with whom you are about to negotiate with, you understand on a core level that  It's Not about YOU!

Lesson Two:   Set the Proper Intention.
This goes  beyond win-win negotiating ; this is closer to  trusting in the Divine Timing of everything that occurs in all of our lives .  Sometimes we cannot see this when we are in the midst of a challenging situation, that is personal to us, and impacts our lives in real significant ways.  These are the negotiating times when you need to remember this lesson more than ever.   Effective negotiating is 10% technique and 90% attitude!

Lesson Three:  Ask Questions - Don't Assume.
Get curious,  have a sincere desire to understand the other person's priorities , hot buttons, strongest desire as it pertains to your negotiating topic.   Listening is key ...probe with a sincere desire to understand.

Lesson Four:  Present a Compelling Compromise.
What are  the benefits in what you are proposing to the individual you are negotiating with .  Understanding the concept of  Pain vs. Pleasure  and how it impacts decisions is important.  People will naturally  move towards whichever option is stronger  and it is up to you to determine what  their unique pain and pleasure motivators  are.

Lesson Five:  Time is Your Friend.
No, does not always mean no,  it may mean not now .  Many individuals make the mistake and abandon efforts when close to an agreement; or even worse,  concede more than they needed to because of a lack of patience .
You must be willing to walk away from any negotiation to have any chance of succeeding.  So, if you are not willing or able to walk away, lower your expectation of how well you will do in your negotiations.

Lesson Six:  Control Your Emotions.
Let's say you're in the middle of  a heated negotiation with your colleague .  You want to come across  as confident, but inside you feel timid .  During these difficult situations, there are actually two conversations happening at the same time.

One is obvious:  It's the conversation you're having with someone else.  The other is the conversation you're having within yourself about how willing and able you are to stretch outside your comfort zone.

In these situations, wouldn't it be useful to have a tool, a skill or a technique that you could use immediately to control your emotions?

I'd like to introduce you to a little technique that has assisted me, many of my clients, and so many others.  It is called EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) a/k/a Tapping.  I invite you to download my Co-Creator's Success Kit, where I provide you with everything you need to start tapping immediately, free of charge, of course!

As I mentioned above, I have used the energy modality of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) a/k/a Tapping to help myself and many clients with amazing results.

Here is my  audio download.  If you need more instruction on how to do basic tapping, or want to learn more about the science behind its results, I invite you to download my Co-Creator's Success Kit from my website.

A Thought to Ponder

Here is something I shared during my presentation while speaking about
Lesson Two: Set the Proper Intention.  How do you set the proper intention?  For me, I've used a little technique that I teach in my Sales Training, and often share with my coaching clients.   It's something that I have
done since I was in my twenties and selling Real Estate, and I continue this practice even today

Prior to any conversation, appointment, meeting, (speaking engagement
J ) where I am in a position to influence or negotiate with an individual or group ; I take less than one minute, close my eyes, take a few deep breathes and I say to myself, this person, is the most important person in my life, in this moment.

That's it...simple right?  I can tell you that when I do this practice, I'm not guaranteed to win the negotiation every time, yet it does go smoother than during the times when I forget to do itAND, I'm certain that the other person feels this positive intention on some energetic level.

If you are willing to give it a shot?  Let me know how it works for you, really...I want to know if you feel the difference, and have the same positive experiences that are similar to what I, and many others have enjoyed for many years.

AND, this technique was featured in the Women's Advantage Calendar earlier this year!
