Artwork compliments of
Mrs. Baca's 1st grade students
In order to schedule conferences with all our families, we will be on minimum days the week of October 10th-13th. Please be sure to pick your child up in a timely manner so teachers can make their afternoon conferences on time.
Looking for a way to be in the know of all things Shell Beach Elementary? Want to make new friends, have fun, and make a difference in our school? If so, the PTO is the place for you. This month's meeting is on October 12th from 6-7 in the school library. We hope to see you there!!
Our 4th grade team of Mrs. Boatenhamer and Mrs. Dang has created a week full of events to promote healthy lifestyle decisions. Be on the look-out for information coming home soon.
The week of events kicks off on
Monday, October 23rd.
Calling all Trunk or Treaters. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, October 28th from 5-7. Enjoy games, a taco truck, and desserts before trunk or treating. We are still looking for
volunteers and trunks for the event.
Halloween is a minimum day this year.
Our annual parade will begin at 10:50. Costumes must be school appropriate. No toy weapons are allowed nor are masks that cover the entire face. Keep in mind that we have students as young as 4. Costumes cannot be too scary. As in year's past, no clown costumes will be allowed. Be on the lookout from your room parent for any classroom activities.
Looking for ways to stay connected with our school?
Here are a few easy ways:
Follow us on Facebook
Look at our school calendar frequently.
Be sure you use an email address that you check. Most communications go home electronically.
Check your child's folder. Most teachers send home a weekly or monthly calendar which includes school events.
Students Are Investigating Math
Math instruction is looking a little different across our district's elementary schools this year. We have adopted Investigations which is a constructivist approach to learning mathematical principles. What does this mean? It means that students are encouraged to develop their understanding of math through constructed learning rather than just rote memorization of facts and formulas. Students are given the opportunity to discuss math in ways they haven't been in the past. Lessons build on
one another and cycle back to skills developed throughout the year.

If you are interested in what you can do to help your child develop a mathematical mindset, check out the video below developed by Stanfprd Professor Jo Boaler,

Our district is hosting a parent math night at the board room on October 11th from 6:00-7:30. Be on the lookout for information coming home for an after school parent session hosted by Dr. Cervantez, Mr. Nygaard,
and Mrs. Weber.

Riding the Wave of Good Character
Shell Beach has a strong tradition of giving back to our community. This year the Student Council partnered with a children's cancer hospital in San Diego to provide almost 100 pairs of pajamas to children suffering from cancer.

In addition, Mrs Vanderlei's class hosted a bake sale complete with lemonade. The stand raised just over $700 to donate to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

We came together as a school community and partnered with Cub Scout Pack 425, Santa Barbara Fire, Cal Fire, and the Atascadero Kiwanis to support the Helming family. Your generous contributions coupled with those in the community allowed us to give the family nearly $14,000 to support the needs of the family.

These words from Ralph Waldo Emerson may never be truer than they are today, "You cannot do a kindness too soon because you never know how soon it will be too late."
