From the Rabbi's Desk

This week as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the State of Israel we thank Hashem for having the merit to live in these historic days, and for seeing the revival of our people in our ancient homeland. The challenges facing Israel, its residents and Jews throughout the world have not abated even in modern  times. The words of the Haggada "in every generation there are those who arrive to destroy us" ring true from the halls of academia to the shores of Tel Aviv. But HKB"H The Holy One Blessed Be He rescues us from the hands remains true. Our thanks and appreciation is to Him and His messengers, Tzahal- Israel Defense Forces and all those who support Israel through prayer, financial means, and by supporting the economy by "Buying Blue."

On celebrating a birthday we often wish "biz hundred und tzvantzig - ad meah v'esrim - till 120." Our prayer at this birthday is l'dor vador ul'netzach n'tzachim.

Ahead of Yom Hazikaron, consider honoring Israel's fallen by taking upon yourselves a kind or sacred act, done in memory of one of these heroes.
Yom Hazikaron, Israel's Memorial Day, is a time to remember those who lost their lives during the struggle for Israel's independence as well as the soldiers who have died while serving in Israel's armed forces. Victims of terror attacks are also remembered.
There is hardly a family in all of Israel who does not have a relative or friend who has died in service to the nation.
As we prepare to celebrate 70 years since the creation of the State of Israel, it's important that people from around the world take time to remember the 23,632 soldiers and security forces that sacrificed their lives for Israel's existence.
This year, a new way exists for people around the globe to honor these fallen heroes.
"Yizkereim: Honor Israel's Fallen" ("Yizkereim" in Hebrew means remember them) is a project which enables anyone to honor the fallen by taking upon themselves at least one kind or sacred act done in memory of one of the fallen.

Launched in February, the project has collected thousands of acts of Chesed, kindness, be they public service, prayer, Torah learning or the giving of Tzedakah, charity, by anyone anywhere in the world, in the memory of the fallen.
Yizkereim is designed to keep each soldier's memory alive with positive actions done in their memory.
When reports of these actions are posted on a specially designated website, bereaved families can read about these acts done in their loved one's name.
Each act of kindness leaves a "lit" virtual candle "burning" on the website.
Visitors to the site can read about the lives of the fallen, what their families and friends said about them, their passions, their personalities, their hopes and aspirations.

To date, some 190 schools, congregations and groups have signed on to the project, and more than 21,000 positive actions have been performed or pledged in soldiers' memories.
This project is a rare opportunity to honor Israelis who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
We invite you to do something positive - an act of kindness or charity - in honor of Israel's fallen and heroes.

"Then Shlomo began to build the House of Hashem in Yerushalayim on Mount Moriah, where [Hashem] had appeared to his father David, at the place which David had designated, at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite."  II Chronicles 3:1 (The Israel Bible™)

Chinese Tourists on Temple Mount with Israeli Flag (Photo via Facebook Stand With Us)
The last time the Israeli flag flew on the Temple Mount was for a very brief time after the IDF conquered the site in the 1967 Six Day War, but on Wednesday, a group of Chinese Christian tourists posed with a flag on the steps leading up to the Dome of the Rock.
On Wednesday, Stand With Us, a non-profit pro-Israel education and advocacy organization based in Los Angeles posted the photo on their Facebook page, saying:
Yosef Rabin writes, "An Israeli Flag has not flown on the Temple Mount since the 1967 War. Today Chinese tourists brought an Israeli Flag up to the Temple Mount. I am not sure how they got the flag past security and how the Waqf [Jordanian Islamic security that controls the Temple Mount] or police did not notice, but this sets a massive precedent - I hope.
In the meantime, A BIG THUMBS UP FOR THE CHINESE!!!"

Despite the best efforts of Rabin, the group of Chinese tourists could not be contacted and nothing more could be discovered about them. It can be assumed that they were not Jewish since Jews who ascend to the Temple Mount are rigorously searched beforehand and accompanied by both Israeli police and Waqf guards to ensure that such displays of Israeli nationalism are prevented from appearing on the site.
When Israel conquered the Temple Mount in the 1967 Six Day War, Motta Gur, the Israeli general who led the troops into Jerusalem, ordered an Israeli flag to be raised atop the golden Dome of the Rock. Defense Minister Moshe Dayan saw this from his post on Mount Scopus and ordered the flag to be lowered.

According to the ceasefire agreed upon formal peace agreement signed between Israel and Jordan after the war, no Jewish religious items or Israeli symbols were permitted at the site. This agreement was formalized in the peace agreement signed in 1994 ceding custodianship of the Temple Mount and Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem to the Hashemite Kingdom.
There is currently an ongoing petition by World Likud, a global extension of the  Likud political party in Israel, and the French Zionist organization,  Israël is Forever , requesting the right to fly the Israeli flag on the Temple Mount.

This Yom Hazikaron Learn All Shas, Mishna and Tanach in Memory of Israel's Fallen Soldiers and Terror Victims with LeKedoshim.com
Once again there is a special international learning project, LeKedoshim.com , to jointly make a siyum hashas on Yom HaZikaron in memory of Israel's fallen soldiers and victims of terror. This year they have also added a siyum mishnayos and siyum Tanach, making it more tangible for a broader audience. Shuls, schools or whole communities can sign up for a whole masechta or a block of dapim, or Sefer in Tanach. Individuals can also sign up for an individual daf. Each participant will receive a name of a fallen soldier or terror victim to learn that daf in their memory on Yom HaZikaron. The learning begins on April 17, 2018 at 8 pm Israel time (1 pm EDT) and finishes on April 18, 2018 at 4 pm Israel time (9 am EDT). For those outside of Israel, this is a wonderful way to connect with Israel and remember those who have given their lives for our homeland.
