GOTS lowering standards for Certified Organic Wool
   Worldwide organic
cotton standards are being lowered, but do not worry,  the Woolgatherer Carding Mill that provides our Premium Eco Wool at Shepherd's Dream will not follow suit.

As leaders in the natural bedding industry, we are committed to providing the highest quality materials for the optimal health and comfort of our customers. The U.S.

Department of Agriculture's (USDA) standards on organic products and The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) have both recently lowered their standards. GOTS is one of the leading processing standards set for organic textiles worldwide. Their standards are more stringent then the basic organic textile certification offered by the USDA -including specific environmental and social criteria as

well. As a result

Shepherd's Dream will go beyond GOTS certification to ensure that our materials are truly organic or better. Although the new GOTS standards allows for up to 30% of an organic fabric to consist of recycled synthetic fibers, we refuse to use any cotton on our breathable products that will interrupt the breathablility & quality of our Pure Wool bedding.

Another very important concern is the allowance of PLA and food-grade polyethylene, for it is not possible to comply with the government flammability mandates if the overall weight percentage is limited to 5%.

To read more about these regulatory changes in certified organic raw materials, you can visit: PrWeb News Release or GOTS

At Shepherd's Dream, we have consistently been strong advocates of Premium Eco Wool rather than Certified Organic Wool because we want our customers to have the healthiest materials to choose from at an affordable cost. See our article "Major Shortage in Certified Organic Wool" in this Spring Newsletter for reasons why we believe Premium Eco Wool is superior to certified organic wool. Also visit: Shepherd's Dream Website to learn more about Eco Wool -that we love so much.

Shortage in Certified Organic Wool
spring lambs

At this time very little organic wool is available on the market; almost no organic wool is grown in the United States. The current organic wool shortage has been challenging and the impact will continue into future supplies.

Multiple farmers that have supplied USDA organic wool previously have unexpectedly given up their certified status this past year. The economic conditions have prompted farmers to increase their prices in order to keep producing USDA certified organic wool. In some cases, these strict organic certification requirements are actually more harmful to the animal then if they were to follow their standard practices. These are some of the reasons why Shepherd's Dream has consistently been a strong advocate for using Premium Eco Wool over certified organic wool.

We find that our Premium Eco Wool

is actually cleaner and of higher quality than the organic wool currently available.  Premium Eco Wool is produced to the highest standards; some of these standards are beyond those specified for organic materials.

Premium Eco wool batting is truly a high quality, chemical-free wool.  We have seen organic wool that is not nearly up to the same quality as our wool when it comes to cleanliness and resilience.

All of the farmers whom we buy wool from are raising their sheep without pesticides and treating them humanely.  Premium Eco Wool is entirely derived from local flocks of sheep that are raised following specific criteria that ensures top quality, chemical free wool. Our Oregon grown, Premium Eco Wool batting is produced at the Woolgatherer Carding Mill, located down the road from Shepherd's Dream.

We prefer Premium Eco Wool over certified organic wool because of its sustainability and we feel it is a healthier choice for the farmers, the sheep, your family and your finances -which all translates into a better nights sleep for you :)

Allergies Getting           You Down?
Replacing your synthetic and down bedding with wool bedding will help you with your allergies.

Wool Is Hypo-allergenic

Dust mites and bed bugs don't like wool as they prefer hot, humid climates that are more common with synthetics and down.  Dust mites are the major cause of allergy and asthma suffering.

Wool Is Mildew Resistant

Since mold is another major cause of allergies, it is good to know that wool is also naturally resistant to mildew.  Wool fibers have a natural water--wicking property that prevents moisture from being retained in the fabric. Besides keeping the skin dry, this quality also naturally inhibits mildew. Wool also has natural anti-microbial properties, because bacteria tends to be attracted to smooth positively charged surfaces like those of synthetic fibers rather than the scaly, neutrally charged surface of Wool fiber.

One of the simplest and least expensive ways to test out the benefits of wool bedding is to start with a sleep pillow.

Our wool filled sleep pillows are available in 3 different weights; soft, medium and firm and in 3 different sizes; standard, queen and king.  Though a wool pillow will last for 15 years or more, we recommend replacing your pillow every couple of years or having us refurbish your old pillow.  The choice is of course up to you, but our pillows do get a lot of use at night, and there is something quite wonderful about laying our head down on a fresh, clean wool pillow!

Spring Care Tips For  Your Wool Bedding

Bring the freshness of spring into your bedroom. It is the perfect time to give your wool bedding a little extra, tender loving care.

Wool bedding will last for several decades with proper care. Here are some tips on how you can care for your wool bedding:

  •  Every three months or more during the sunny months, remove all your bedding from your mattress and place your bedding out in the sun. Sun will naturally deodorize, bleach, disinfect and revitalize your bedding. You can hang your bedding over railings or furniture, out the window, or lay your bedding on a blanket in the sun.
  • Once per year, take your wool mattress outside for a full day in the sun and air; you will love how fresh everything will smell and feel after a full day of sunshine!

If you live in a particularly humid climate you can take additional steps throughout the year:

  • Use a dehumidifier in your bedroom
  • Sun and air bedding more frequently
  • Fold all bedding over in half to allow the bottom of the mattress additional air
  • Vacuum your mattress to pull air through the fibers

Beyond these tips for regular care of your wool bed & bedding, here are some suggestions on how to care for your bedding when accidents happen:

Our non-washable wool products can be gently spot cleaned. Make sure to avoid warm/hot water and to dry the item completely before use.

Smaller Accidents
  • Use towels to remove most of the spill.
  • Smaller accidents can be spot cleaned with a soft brush and natural wool wash.  Let cool water run through the effected area until soap is washed away and water comes through clear.
  • To remove residual stains you can dampen the stained area ( use a little lemon or non-chlorine bleach for additional bleaching) and place in the sun.

Larger accidents
  • Clean up as much as possible with towels.
  • Fill bathtub or basin with cool/tepid water.
  • Add a bit of wool wash to the water or directly to soiled area.
  • Submerge soiled area and swish gently in the water.
  • Drain the basin, press water out of the bedding, and repeat as desired. Avoid wringing or twisting the wet wool.
  • To remove odors you can dilute vinegar in water and pour through the soiled area (baking soda and water can also be used, as an alternative to vinegar).
  • Place the item in the sun to dry quickly or next to a heat source.
  • Again, be sure that the item is thoroughly dry before using.  Further, some of our customers have found that by placing their wool article in a dryer on low heat they can fluff the wool.

Thank you!

Just wanted to write and say thank you for our wonderful new wool bed.  We just experienced our first night and it was everything we expected. Here are a few of our first observations:
-  the bedding feels light and breathe-able.
-  we slept more soundly without waking up frequently like with our other bed.
-  it was comfortable to sleep both on our sides and back.
-  the quality of sleep was deeper and when it was time to get up we felt really rested and ready to start the day.

Thank you so much for educating us on what to expect for our investment in an all wool bed and for providing such a superior product.  It was worth every penny.  We look forward to years to come of sound and restful sleep.

I did order 16 oz of your batting (it was the craft batting) and it's GREAT!!!!!

Thank you for providing such a wonderful product and I will definitely order more when I run out. I'm also telling all my friends so hopefully you'll get orders from that, too.

The Contour Pillow is the best pillow ever. I love this pillow. It has great support in all the right places and how you can see and feel the quality and care that went into making it. It's such a joy to sleep on every night. I'm a side sleeper and use this on top of another standard pillow. My next purchase will be another pillow from this site so that eventually all my pillows will be wool.
