From the desk of Mary Charles, Interim CEO
It has been a very busy summer at GSMISTS! As you read on in this issue of Shore Essentials and learn about much of the work that our staff have focused on these past few months, please take a look at   17 New Things for 2017.

Recently, I spent several nights throughout the council conducting listening session with volunteers. I shared information on the current status of our council and listened to concerns. I want to thank all those who came and listened and shared with me.  Here are key takeaways from those sessions:
  • Volunteers want to know what is going on, so we as staff and the board need to increase our communication on a more regular basis. I promise to make this happen.
  • You want our website to better serve your needs and we are working every day to include more information and make things easier to find and use. For instance, we are moving toward having all forms in fillable PDF format so that you can fill in online, save and email or print.
  • I have made clear to staff that you want us to answer our phones, return emails and answer questions - so we have put in place a 24 hour return goal for any phone or email box that does not give you an "out of office" response. We have created a FAQ spreadsheet with frequently asked questions for each of our front desk staff so they can help you with any common questions.
  • Volunteers told me they want to hear about the great things that others are doing, so we will try to find ways to bring to you more information on happenings from around the council.
The council has challenges ahead of us but one thing we can do right now is to make sure that we are reaching out and engaging every girl who would like to share in the fun and leadership development that Girl Scouting provides and will help them grow into great adults.

It will make all of us proud for helping them to get there!

Fall Recruitment
We will be working closely with Service Unit volunteers to assist with Fall Membership Recruitment. We wish to host a Girl Scout Recruitment event in every elementary school, and need your help! Please contact your Membership staff to let them know of your availability to help.  We will provide the materials needed to hold a successful event. For a list of scheduled events so far, please click here.

On-Time Registration is happening NOW!  Girls and Volunteers who register during our on-time season (July 16 - Sept 30) are eligible to order our exclusive Girl Scout inspired T-shirt. This tee is only available for those who register during the "on-time" dates and will not be available in Girl Scout Shops.
IMPORTANT eBIZ INFORMATION: TROOP MANAGEMENT

This means that online membership registrations for Troop Leaders renewing 2017 registrations through Troop Management should be concluded before Friday, September 30, 2016 at 11:59 pm ET.
  • On Friday Sept 30, when Troop Leaders click on the "My Troops" tab in eBiz, a specialized maintenance page will appear that only affects troop management.
  • Troop Leaders will not have access to their troops in eBiz for the full day on Friday.
  • eBiz websites will remain up and Personify will not
  • experience any downtime.
  • Active 2017 Troop Leaders will be able to access their troops on Saturday, October 1 and will see all the active 2017 troop members.
  • Family Managers will be unaffected and will continue to see their family members.
Community Partnerships
GSMISTS is making a commitment to bringing local programming opportunities to each region across our council.

Programming staff are working with local organizations on developing troop programing and Girl Scout badge activities.

Troop Leaders will be able to easily pick from the available opportunities here, so k eep watching for more new partnerships as we build our program offerings.
Unique Art Prize 2016 Opportunity
Artist Pamela Alderman has invited the Girl Scouts from Michigan Shore to Shore to partner with her 2016 entry in ArtPrize, an open international art competition that takes place each fall in Grand Rapids - and it's all free and open to the public.

Pamela's 2016 installation, Color Me Orange-Color Me Kind
depicts our struggles with difficult relationships.

Girl Scouts have been invited to participate with Pamela's installation as volunteers who interact with the public and invite them to tie an orange ribbon on a mesh canvas representing their commitment to live by the Golden Rule.

The Forest Hills Service Unit has agreed to take the lead in organizing this partnership. This is an exciting opportunity for our troops to take an active role in an Art Prize entry with significant meaning.
