Movie Madness
CKC Service Unit will be hosting a Movie Madness event on January 20-21. In this overnight event, girls will enjoy three movies, music patch, and activities. The cost includes unlimited pop & popcorn! 

* Michigan Winter Try-Athlon on February 5. The Try-Athlon is a family friendly event for people who want to try the sports of luge, ice speed skating, and cross country skiing. This event is geared towards people who have never tried these sports. No big awards. No pressure to win. Just fun experiencing a sport you have never tried before.  * Grand Rapids Drive Girl Scout Night on February 25.  Join us for a fun night of basketball for all girls!  Custom patch will be available along with a voucher for hot dog/soda and there will be a post-game free throw shot. Open Your Eyes: The Power of Art on February 25 at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Scouts will practice their critical thinking skills as they explore the art of Ai Weiwei, internationally renowned Chinese artist and activist. This event is a natural tie-in to Girl Scout World Thinking Day, a day of international friendship that focuses on issues that affect girls and young women.

*Every Dress has a Story running March 3-19, 2017. GSMISTS will be partnering with Goodwill Industries for a fourth year to collect dresses for the Every Dress Has a Story campaign. To learn more or sign up, click here.

A Scout is Reverent Cub Scout Retreat   on January 14,  join other Catholic Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and American Heritage Girls and their families for a day of faith and age-appropriate activities.

Service Unit Troop Events
If you are holding local events that are open to the entire council, we would love to help you promote it! We are looking for events that are Girl Scout badge based, financial literacy, healthy living, etc. Please complete and submit this form for consideration.

The Rogers City/Onaway Service Unit reached 109% of their goal.

Membership Registration
Please submit GSUSA Membership registration forms as soon as possible. This will ensure that our data entry can be completed in a timely manner so we can provide up to date rosters to our Service Units. It is also a must that all girls participating in the Cookie Program be registered Girl Scout members. Please contact your membership staff person for assistance in turning in your registrations. Thank you for all of your support and efforts.
 
We have many Service Units who are on their way to reaching their girl/adult membership goals. Keep up the great work. Together we can achieve greatness.
 
Finance Reports
Be sure to update your troop/group Detailed Cash Report on a regular basis. As your troop has income or expenses, it works well to log the transactions right away. When it is time to submit, all you have to do is make a copy. The Finance Report/Detailed Cash Report can be found on our website (www.gsmists.org) under the Forms tab.

Find your inner artist at Raven Hill Discovery Center

 
Explore the "Artist Within" at Raven Hill Discovery Center as you learn the connections between science, history and the arts.
Choose a date and time of your choice to create your own silky soft sensation in your favorite colors!   Fold your silk scarf, clip it and drizzle on your favorite colors!   Then wrap yourself in a wash of mesmerizing colors.   Plan a time for the Shibori Experience at Raven Hill Discovery Center.   Fashion your own special look or create a lavish gift for a friend or relative.   Be sure to wear old clothes or bring an old shirt or apron to protect your clothes from the dyes.   Afterward:   Enjoy refreshments and play in the museum, while you show off your new creation.   Then come another time and create a fused glass ornament or a copper pendant.
 
GVSU Girl Scout Day Cheer/Dance Clinic 
Date: January 21st
Time: Clinic starts at 9 AM. GVSU Women's Basketball Game starts at 12 PM
Description: Day will start with clinic with the GVSU Cheer and Dance teams in the morning. At noon the GVUSA Women's Basketball game will start and girls will be preforming in the halftime show. Girl Scouts attending the clinic are invited to stay for the GVSU Women's and Men's games at no additional cost. Tickets are $5 for family members that want to stay and the ticket includes both games. Please pack a lunch.

Adult Recognition for Awards Season
Award season is right around the corner, which means it's time to recognize our dedicated volunteers for the hard work they do! If you know a fellow volunteer who deserves special recognition, nominate them for one of our Girl Scout adult awards! For guidance, check out our Adult Recognitions Handbook here. Remember, nomination forms are due to a council office no later than Wednesday February 1 st. If you have further questions or need additional guidance, please contact mvp@gsmists.org.


Scholarship Information 
Graduating Ambassadors eligible for KPMG future leaders program and scholarship
The KPMG Future Leaders Program selects top female high school seniors from around the country to participate in the program and receive a KPMG Future Leaders Scholarship of $10,000 per year through four years of college. Selected students attend a three-day retreat at Stanford University the summer before their freshman year of college; in 2017, the retreat will be held July 17-19. Students also participate in a yearlong mentoring program, paired with a female leader participating in the KPMG Women's Leadership Summit. Apply here

2017 Chuck McLane Scholarship for STEM-Related Gold Award Recipients Provided by the Arconic Foundation (formerly Alcoa Foundation), the Chuck McLane Scholarship is a $10,000 college scholarship awarded to two Girl Scout Gold Award recipients whose projects involved science, technology, engineering, and/or math (STEM). Applications are due by Feb. 21. Apply here

Product Sales
Please make sure that all girls and adult members are re-registered for the 2017 Membership season if they wish to participate in the upcoming 2017 Cookie Sale. Please also remember, before a girl receives a selling packet or order card, the parent/guardian must fill out the Parent Permission form for the troop to keep on file. One form is good for both Fall and Cookie sales.

2017 Girl Scout Cookie Season starts January 13th.
The initial order time frame runs till January 29th but sales do not need to stop then. Please utilize the Goal Getter cards for any additional sales after January 29th. Contest details coming soon!

Online Cookie Training
was recorded for viewing and is available anytime here Service Unit Product Sale Managers will be scheduling area trainings for all leaders who wish to attend in-person. Please ask your Service Unit Representative for dates and times.

New this Cookie Season: ONLINE Cookie Dough! There will be an option to chose whether your girls would like to use cookie dough online or still receive a Cookie Dough card to use through our local council shops. All girls in troop do not have to agree on the method. Some may chose online while others may want the card. Once the choice is made, it can not be reversed. Please contact us with any questions.

2016 Cookie Dough cards expire on January 29, 2017. 
Visit one of our council shops to spend any amount that may be left. The girls worked very hard to earn these rewards and we want them to take advantage of their hard work and efforts! Cookie Dough may be spent on anything available in our Council Shops, for girl membership registration and council fee, camp, or Service Unit events.

Check out the new  Gift of Caring Program
this year for Fall Sales and Cookies. All donations stay at your local level with girls distributing the items to their choice of "Hometown Heroes." W e ask that the girls work with their Service Unit to coordinate a designated site, and we would love to see pictures of the girls donating!
National Council Delegates
I n 2017, we're putting the spotlight squarely on girls and refocusing our Girl Scout convention to make it the premier event for every G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ who wants to make the world a better place-and we're calling it G.I.R.L. 2017.

The time is now-time to give girls and young women the tools to empower themselves for a lifetime of leadership, to connect and share ideas with one another in friendship, and to act together in true team spirit to let the world know girls can make awesome, game-changing things happen!

In October 2017, you can join Girl Scouts, the biggest girl-serving organization in the world, as we come together to celebrate girls in a big, big way. From educational sessions to inspiring speakers and tons of one-of-a-kind FUN, this is the girl-power event of the year. You don't want to miss it! Check back here for updates.

National Council Delegates

What is a National Delegate?
National delegates serve for three years and attend the National Council Session, a meeting of Girl Scouts nationwide, which happens every three years.

What do National Delegates Do?
National delegates attend the National Council Session and vote on measures as representatives of our council. They also generally participate in discussion session before the National Council Session in order to better represent the Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore.

Girls' Choice Polls
Girls' Choice Polls Open January 11
Girls' Choice is back! As part of this girl-led badge creation process, we will offer new badges for Daisies through Ambassadors. For the first round of voting, polls will be open January 11-22, and girls will vote for one of two badge categories-Outdoors or STEM-as well as for a badge topic pertaining to their chosen category.
