HICKORY, NC - The 1st-Place Hickory Crawdads fell, 6-4, to the Delmarva Shorebirds on Thursday evening, before 1,569 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium.
The Crawdads (11-4, 47-37) jumped ahead early with one run in the bottom of the first inning against RHP Miguel Chalas (W, 7-4). With one out, 2B Nick Urbanus singled to center field. Urbanus scored on a 3B Drew Robinson RBI double to right-center field, putting Hickory up, 1-0, right away.
The 'Dads added to their lead with a run in the second inning. LF Jhonny Gomez singled on a low line drive to center field to start the stanza. Gomez then reached third base after a single from DH Kevin Torres and a fielder's choice off the bat of RF Jordan Akins. SS Rougned Odor plated Gomez on an RBI base hit to right field, boosting Hickory's lead to 2-0.
The Shorebirds (4-10, 32-51) tied the game in the top of the fourth inning against LHP Victor Payano. After LF Connor Narron walked, DH Michael Ohlman hit a two-run home run to knot the score at 2-2.
Hickory regained a two-run cushion in the fifth inning. With two out, C Jorge Alfaro singled and CF Chris Grayson followed with a walk, extending the inning. Gomez then drove a two-run double to the left-field corner, as the Crawdads moved back into the lead, 4-2.
However, the Shorebirds came from behind and took their first lead of the game in the top of the sixth inning. LF Connor Narron led off with a single, before Ohlman followed with a walk, and then the bases were loaded after a free pass drawn by 1B Wynston Sawyer. A wild pitch from RHP Arlett Mavare (L, 3-4) enabled Narron to race in, as all three runners advanced ninety feet. After C Adam Davis was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, the Shorebirds plated two runs on a fielder's choice and an error. SS Mychal Givens bounced a grounder to first, but 1B Trever Adams fired wide of home plate, allowing two runs to score for the 5-4 Delmarva lead.
The Shorebirds added their final tally when a balk forced in a runner in the top of the eighth, while Delmarva RHP Devin Jones (S, 3) logged four scoreless relief innings to close the 6-4 win for Delmarva.
