Dear Shortridge High School Alumni:

As we begin to enter into May, there is a lot happening on campus, as well as within the IPS District.  Let me address the potential of high school closings.  Due to occupancy and the potential for cost savings, Indianapolis Public Schools has developed Facility Utilization Task Force, here which has recommended IPS operate only four (4) high schools for the 2018-2019 school year (SY).  Currently, there are eight (8) high schools, but John Marshall Community High School will be converted to a middle school next year.

The seven (7) high schools that will be operating during the 2017-2018 school year are: Arlington Community HS, Arsenal Tech HS, Broad Ripple HS, Crispus Attucks HS, George Washington Community HS, Northwest Community HS, and Shortridge HS.  Potentially, three of these schools could close for the 2018-2019 School Year.  IPS is holding community meetings on May 11 (6p.m., Zion Hope Baptist Church, 5950 E. 46th Street, Indianapolis 46226) and May 15 (6 pm, Haughville Library, 2121 W. Michigan Street, Indianapolis 46222).

A few details about Shortridge High School since it became an International Baccalaureate (IB) High School in the fall of 2015: Shortridge HS is a Community Center. When we look at facility utilization, we believe that utilization not only includes student enrollment, but measures the impact the space has had in terms of community building.  SHS is home to two community groups, the IPS Primary Program, a district-wide maker space, Butler classrooms life skills programs, and a public library with the Indianapolis Marion County Public Library (IMCPL).  As well, the space is utilized by a number of outside organizations for speaking engagements, community events, youth programs and productions.  Recently we hosted the Pulitzer Prize winning author, Sonia Nazario.

Today, SHS currently is the highest in demand choice high school in IPS, and ranked fourth among all IPS choice schools with well over 400 applications and currently more than 185 incoming freshmen who have confirmed seats for the 2017-2018 SY.  Our current ninth grade class is at 105, thus an increase of over 75%.  Our increase in scholarships dollars from the Classes of 2015 to 2016 increased by more than 200%.

Our students continue to achieve academically:
-         We are the highest performing high school in the IPS District when measuring PSAT, SAT and State Testing data.  In fact, we have two (2) National Merit Finalists graduating in the Class of 2017 and we had the only senior recognized as an Academic All-Star.
-         Chen, one of our current Shortridge HS juniors, is competing at the National Shakespearean Competition held at the Lincoln Center in New York City.  Chen won the state level competition two (2) months ago and is now competing at the national level representing the State of Indiana.
-         Our students continue to compete in the IUPUI Math Competition, State Level Robotics Tournament, Mock Trial, Debate and Academic Super Bowl.  At the same time, our students are traveling across the US, completing thousands of hours of community service and competing in athletic tournaments.

I encourage you to engage in the discussion regarding school closings.  Shortridge is your alma mater, and while I am charged with serving as the current Principal, I am only a custodian to the history and legacy of your high school.

While our historic building was once shuttered, I am working to ensure Shortridge HS remains a viable educational choice in our city for the next 150 years.
